Excerpt from A History of Booksellers, the Old and the New Istory has been aptly termed the essence of innumerable biographies; and this surely justifies us in the selection of our title but in inditing a volume to be issued in a cheap and popular form, it was manifestly impossible to trace the careers of all the eminent members ancient and, modern, of a Trade so widely extended had we, indeed, possessed all possible leisure for research, every available material, and a space thoroughly unlimited, it is most probable that the result would have been distinguished chiefly for its bulk, tediousness, and monotony. It was resolved, therefore, in the first planning of the volume, to primarily trace the origin and growth of the Book selling and Publishing Trades up to a comparatively modern period; and then to select, for fuller treat ment, the most typical English representatives of each one of the various branches into which a natural division of labour had subdivided the whole. And, by this plan, it is believed that, while some firms at present growing into eminence may have been omitted, or have received but scant acknowledgment. ‘Pen, Pencil, and Poison’ is one of Wilde’s most intriguing essays. Part biography, part social commentary, and part philosophical debate, he writes the biography of an art critic, who was also convicted of murder. However, in true Wildean style, there’s more to the essay than meets the eye. While documenting the life and crimes of Thomas Griffiths Wainwright, Wilde explores the ideas of dual identity, sin in the formation of the personality, and the relationship between crime and culture. ‘Pen, Pencil, and Poison’ is a fascinating insight into some of the conventions of the time. Oscar Wilde (1854 – 1900) was an Irish novelist, poet, playwright, and wit. He was an advocate of the Aesthetic movement, which extolled the virtues of art for the sake of art. During his career, Wilde wrote nine plays, including ‘The Importance of Being Earnest,’ ‘Lady Windermere’s Fan,’ and ‘A Woman of No Importance,’ many of which are still performed today. His only novel, ‘The Picture of Dorian Gray’ was adapted for the silver screen, in the film, ‘Dorian Gray,’ starring Ben Barnes and Colin Firth. In addition, Wilde wrote 43 poems, and seven essays. His life was the subject of a film, starring Stephen Fry.

Excerpt from Shadows of the Old Booksellers View, appear to have too much of a com merciai character to be generally interesting. At any rate they may seem more fitted for the valuable but somewhat dry details of bibliography, than to be included under a title which may indicate something as much akin to fiction as to fact. In 1851 and 1852 I wrote for Mr. Dickens's 'household Words' a series of sketches under the title of 'shadows;' by which title I sought to indicate their half ideal, half real, character. Those 'shadows' had for the most part the interest which belongs to romance as well as to history. The subjects of the present outlines, with a few exceptions, are little fitted for imaginative pictures of startling adventures, or of curious details of domestic life. But they have another sort of interest. They flit before me, ever accompanied with Shadows of many. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Book-Plates, Old and New The dealer had opened wide one of the closest written pages of French history. That old book-plate had evidently been as full of danger to the scion of the noble house, as a white cockade, and he had wisely covered it with the Phrygian cap of liberty. And it was just this historical, or rather tell-tale quality of book-plates which primar ily makes them full of interest, and which they seldom lack. But in the fulfillment of their purpose it is not essential. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
