Excerpt from A History of Agriculture and Prices in England, Vol. 7: From the Year After the Oxford Parliament (1259) To the Commencement of the Continental War (1793); Compiled Entirely From Original and Contemporaneous Records; 1703-1793, Part II The next series of tables, seven to eleven, is intended to assist the student of prices of labour in the eighteenth century. The first is an assessment of wages by the Justices of the Peace for the West Riding, which I was allowed to copy from the original by the kindness of the Clerk to the Justices. It was repeated several times, generally without alteration. Such assessments of wages are perhaps not quite so uncommon as they wereviii introduction. Excerpt from A History of Agriculture and Prices in England, 1401 1582, Vol. 3: From the Year After the Oxford Parliament, 1259, to the Commencement of the Continental War, 1793 The most valuable facts contained in this volume are derived from the records preserved in the Oxford and Cambridge Colleges. There are a few farm accounts of New College, which continued the practice of agriculture on account of the corporation for about thirty-five years after the commencement of the fifteenth century; but for the most part the record is that of expenditure, not of production. The accounts, however, of the Oxford Col leges are not precise in detail. It appears that the annual roll, signed by the bursars, was merely an abstract of a more detailed account, which, having served its imme diate purpose, was, cast aside or destroyed. Thus the accounts cf Magdalen College, Oxford, contain one year, I Ric. III, in which the original method of stating the balances is represented, and a large volume of rough entries from which numerous, and those very valuable, facts have been derived. But as a rule the entries are disappointing. The Oxford Colleges, which at an early date abandoned baking and brewing on their own account and dealt directly with tradesmen, seldom give quanti ties. They are also careless in keeping accounts, and sometimes the head of the College reproves the bursars for neglect of duty. Excerpt from A History of Agriculture and Prices in England, Vol. 7: From the Year After the Oxford Parliament, 1259, to the Commencement of the Continental War, 1793; Compiled Entirely From Original and Contemporaneous Records; Part I, 1708-1793 AS it has been decided to bring the Histom (y Agriculture and Prices to an end with the seventh volume, which is now laid before the public, some apology for the incomplete condition of the work is necessary, as well as an explanation of the great delay which has occurred in printing these pages. The fifth and sixth volumes were published in 1887, and during the last three years of his life my father was busily en gaged in collecting material for the concluding part of his book. A large number of figures had been brought together, and even tabulated, when he was seized with the illness that ultimately proved fatal to him. But the series was incomplete, and though prices had been collected for several articles for every year in the period he had set himself to deal with, many subjects were but poorly represented. Among the papers that were left, no clue was found to the existence of any other figures, or to the sources from which he had proposed to draw further information. My father invariably worked alone, with out assistance or delegation, and there was no one therefore who was in a position to offer any valuable opinion on the intended scope of the work. When therefore the Delegates of the University Press kindly agreed to allow me to edit the manuscript my father left behind him, two courses were open to me. Excerpt from A History of Agriculture and Prices in England, Vol. 5: From the Year After the Oxford Parliament (1259) To the Commencement of the Continental War (1793); Compiled Entirely From Original and Contemporaneous Records; 1583-1702 A third important fact in the economical history of this period is the rapid growth of population, despite the singular severity with which plagues of various kinds - the old plague of r 348, small-pox, and typhus or spotted fever - ravaged the towns. This increase was partly due to immigration from the Netherlands and France, partly to the growth of domestic industries, especially cloth-weaving, but most of all to the settle ment and occupation of the counties north of the Trent. At the time of the Revolution, as we can see from the returns of the Hearth Tax, the northern counties were nearly as fully peopled as the southern, certain differ ences of soil and climate being taken into account. These counties were especially, though not wholly, the seats of the new manufactures. In the seventeenth century, too, other manufactures than those of textile fabrics made considerable progress. Paper, glass and iron were increasingly produced in England, apparently of excellent quality, and chiefly in the South of England paper in Kent, glass and iron in Sussex. It is to this century jalso that the art of smelting iron by pit-cod is assigned. There is evidence that this process was known a century before, but it may well have been improved by Dud Dudley, its reputed inventor.
