Excerpt from A History and Description of Italian Majolica As a rule, researches were conducted, in the past, on divergent and often restricted lines. One group of writers has limited its labours to ransacking public archives in search of fresh and illuminative texts, neglecting to prosecute a Simultaneous examination of the productions of the old craft. Others have devoted all their attention to the marks, and to the typical features distinguishing the ware of various centres ranging the whole of it into somewhat arbitrary classes, heedless of the corroborative importance of existing documents. Thus, many a groundless statement, originally allowed to pass unchallenged, has been so repeatedly put into print that it has now become an article of faith to the unwary. In the same way we have come to accept as fully authenticated certain doubtful marks of which nothing definite has ever sanctioned some merely hypothetical ascription.
