Excerpt from A History and Description of French Porcelain The history of French porcelain must always be full of interest to the English reader because, beyond the intrinsic merits of the material and the marvellous technical skill displayed in the finest examples of French porcelain, we can never forget that the earliest English porcelains, particularly those of Bow and Chelsea, owed so much, both directly and indirectly, to our neighbours across the Channel. Excerpt from Nineteenth-Century English Ceramic Art There are many books on English pottery and porcelain which treat of Old ceramic art, but there are very few which deal with the later work of the nineteenth century, which Show the special wares Of the Victorian period and those of our own times, and which record the development of potteries whose Oldest products are modern. Hence this book, which is an endeavour to do some justice to the descendants of the eighteenth-century potters, will at the same time recognise the talents of men who have moved along on independent lines, working out ideas which are Characteristic of their wares. Excerpt from English Pottery and Porcelain: A Handbook for the Collector, Giving the Characteristics of the Chief Wares Produced From the 16th to the 19th Century, the Different Factory Marks, and Some Present-Day Values of Typical Specimens Though the collecting of pottery and porcelain has been disparagingly referred to as a "mania" or a "fad," yet even its worst detractors cannot deny that it is an interesting one. Nor is it without historic or educational value, to say nothing of the fact that if made with care a collection may be regarded in the light of a profitable investment. Prices for genuine pieces are yearly hardening, and for even what was once regarded as very common earthenware - lustre, for instance - three times as much as was possible ten years ago can now be obtained. These prices are likely to be still further enhanced, as by the efflux of Time such fragile articles are from their very nature bound to get scarcer. The "craze," or whatever else it may be called, for collecting china has had a considerable literature of its own, though chiefly, it must be admitted, for the comparatively well-to-do and the more or less experienced collector. In the past the less wealthy and the inexperienced have suffered from a dearth of handbooks that would help them. The aim of the present volume is to supply the omission. Excerpt from A General History of Porcelain, Vol. 1 Mr. Bernard Rackham and Mr. E. G. Hawke, who have shared the onerous labours of reading portions or the whole of the proofs and have aided me by their knowledge and counsel. My grateful thanks are also due to the Keepers of the Collections in the British. Museum, the Victoria and Albert Museum, and Hertford House, for the facilities they have given me for a searching scrutiny of their treasures and the temporary displacement of the numerous specimens chosen for illustration.
