Excerpt from Guide to St. Helena: Descriptive and Historical, With a Visit to Longwood, and Napoleon's Tomb I think it necessary to explain by way of preface, how it happens that the book should not run on exactly in continuous or consecutive order. That part of it which I have boldly taken upon myself to call Historical, was written as an introduction to the St. Helena Calendar for the present year, but, after being printed, was not considered suitable to the decorous gravity, and formal profundity of that learned and elaborate production. Some one conceived the idea of publishing it separately, which, in the plenitude of my amour propre, I most graciously approved of, and so sat myself down to write an Introduction to usher it into the world (of St Helena) in a decent and becoming condition. By some strange hocus-pocus of author-craft, however, it grew to longer dimensions than the book it was intended to introduce; hence the necessity of this introduction to an introduction! This, it is hoped, will account in some measure for its want of sequence and direct connection, which is all I intend saying on that part of the business. With respect to errors, slips of the pen, and other grave matters of the kind, it is considered necessary to inform all my truly benevolent readers, that I have no intention of bothering them with the apparition of an errata, for several reasons. In 1814 Napoleon Bonaparte arrived on St. Helena for a surreal exile that would last until his death six years later. • "Dazzling... a compelling meditation on Napoleon's exile...Blackburn has brought her startlingly imaginative sensitivity to bear on a vanished time."—The New York Times Book Review “A resonant meditation on exile, fame, the stories we tell about ourselves (and) the bigger stories we tell about our great figures.” —Los Angeles Times Book Review

'Vibrant and illuminating ... [Dywer] tells a fascinating tale' The Times 'Refreshing scholarship ... Energetic, readable and filled with colourful detail ... Napoleon: Passion, Death and Resurrection is a thoroughly enjoyable book which divides well the reality of exile from the legend that sprang from it' Literary Review This meticulously researched study opens with Napoleon no longer in power, but instead a prisoner on the island of St Helena. This may have been a great fall from power, but Napoleon still held immense attraction. Every day, huge crowds would gather on the far shore in the hope of catching a glimpse of him. Philip Dwyer closes his ambitious trilogy exploring Napoleon's life, legacy and myth by moving from those first months of imprisonment, through the years of exile, up to death and then beyond, examining how the foundations of legend that had been laid by Napoleon during his lifetime continued to be built upon by his followers. This is a fitting and authoritative end to a definitive work.
