In this monograph the authors extend the classical algebraic theory of quadratic forms over fields to diagonal quadratic forms with invertible entries over broad classes of commutative, unitary rings where is not a sum of squares and is invertible. They accomplish this by: (1) Extending the classical notion of matrix isometry of forms to a suitable notion of -isometry, where is a preorder of the given ring, , or . (2) Introducing in this context three axioms expressing simple properties of (value) representation of elements of the ring by quadratic forms, well-known to hold in the field case.

A broad range of topics is covered here, including commutative monoid rings, the Jacobson radical of semigroup rings, blocks of modular group algebras, nilpotency index of the radical of group algebras, the isomorphism problem for group rings, inverse semigroup algebras and the Picard group of an abelian group ring. The survey lectures provide an up-to-date account of the current state of the subject and form a comprehensive introduction for intending researchers.

"'Highly recommended' by the Bulletin of the London Mathematical Society, this book offers a comprehensive, self-contained treatment of group rings. The subject involves the intersection of two essentially different disciplines, group theory and ring theory. The Bulletin of the American Mathematical Society hailed this treatment as 'a majestic account,' proclaiming it "encyclopedic and lucid." 1985 edition"--

The purpose of this book is to give a self-contained, up-to-date account of the structure of unit groups of classical rings. In so doing, the work draws together four areas of mathematics: ring theory, group theory, group representation theory, and algebraic number theory. The ensuing interplay between these disciplines provides a unique source of enrichment for each of them. The main theme centers on two related problems: to determine the isomorphism class of the unit group (U)R of ring R in terms of natural invariants associated with R; and to find an effective method for the construction of units of ring R. Various threads of the development are tied together to convey a comprehensive picture of the current state of the subject. Examples are provided to help research workers who need to compute explicitly unit groups of certain rings. A familiarity with basic ring-theoretic and group-theoretic concepts is assumed, but a chapter on algebraic preliminaries is included. The text is distinguished by its very clear exposition.

For readers with a basic graduate level background in algebra, these ten articles provide a readable introduction to three major interrelated subjects of noncommutative algebra. The theme is the interplay between group theory and ring theory, dealing specifically with group rings, crossed products, and the Galois theory of rings. The author has carefully included most definitions, to keep the required background minimal. Furthermore, each article contains a selection of results on the given topic, a limited number of proofs or sketches, and at least a few open problems.
