Excerpt from A Grammar of the Japanese Spoken Language This Edition has been thoroughly rewritten. It is also much enlarged, and is almost completely a new work. More exclusive attention has been paid in it to the Tokio dialect, which now bids fair to become the language of the upper classes of Japan generally. At the suggestion of a friend, a literal interlinear translation of the examples has been added. No translation, however, has ordinarily been given of the particles which occur in them. Their meaning can be found in the chapter on particles. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from An English-Japanese Dictionary of the Spoken Language During the quarter of a century which has elapsed since the issue of the last edition of this Dictionary the vocabulary of the Japanese Spoken Language has been enriched by the addition of a. Very considerable body of fresh terms, technical and other. Some already existed in the literary language, others have been newly coined to meet the varied needs of New Japan but all, or nearly all, are Sinico - Japanese and as such have necessarily found their way into conver sational use through the medium of the Written Language, - the press, the platform, and the bar being largely instrumental in gaining them colloquial currency. The process of colloquialization, however, is not yet, perhaps never will be, complete, and educated Japanese, to whom alone such terms are fully intelligible, probably have the written character before their mind's eye while conversing. These considerations account for the only innovation in the present. Edition of this wolk calling for special remark here, - the insertion, namely, of Chinese characters wherever it appeared that their presence would add to the interest and general utility of this compilation, which, despite this new departure, remains, both in respect of vocabulary and grammatical forms, substantially a dictionary of the Spoken Language. Excerpt from An Historical Grammar of Japanese The chief object of this work is to provide material for study of the affiliations of the Japanese language, and, in so far as philological evidence is of value, for inquiry into the origins of the Japanese race but it has been so planned as to be, I hope, Of interest to students of general linguistic theory. I trust also that advanced students of Japanese, especially those who wish to read early and medieval texts, will find it useful as a work Of reference and even those who are concerned only with the modern spoken and written languages will, I believe, find many of their difficulties removed by gaining some knowledge of the development of grammatical forms and the growth of common idioms. Excerpt from The Spoken Language of Japan: A Course of Exercises in Familiar Conversation In the following table, the Kana signs are given, not in the customary Japanese course of succession, but in conjunction with English equivalents of the various syllables, arranged in an order that is judged convenient for reference by foreign students. It will be observed that several of the signs are more than once repeated, with the addition of the side marks and O, which denote certain changes of utterance. The effect of 'v is to harden the original consonant sound while 0, used only for syllables that begin with an aspirate or dento-labial, indicates a change to the sound of the English labial p. By these means, lea is changed to ya; te to de; hi to bi or pi fu to bu. Or pa etc. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from A Grammar of the Japanese Written Language But even in this early stage it was occasionally found necessary to give the Chinese characters a phonetic value, in order to write Japanese proper names of unknown or doubtful derivation, and other words or particles for which there were no convenient Chinese equivalents. Besides, in the case of poetry, nzana could only give the meaning, whereas with band, not only the meaning, but the precise words and particles used could be expressed, and consequently the metre rendered discernible. These causes gradually gave rise to a more extended use of the Chinese characters as mere phonetic signs. The poetry in the Koji/ei is written in leana, and in the Manyo's/zin, a collection of poems extending over the period from the fifth to the ninth century, a gradual increase in the proportion of phonetic signs is plainly observable.
