Download A German-American's Confession of Faith (Classic Reprint) Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
Excerpt from A German-American's Confession of Faith In view of the bitter and ill informed criticism which my stand during the present war has evoked from many Germans and German-Americans, I think it a duty both to myself and to the cause which I represent to bring together at least some of the documents in which my course of action is contained. They consist of articles and other kinds of contributions to various magazines and newspapers between October 1914 and May 1915, dealing successively with the following topics: the moral and spiritual forces of contemporary Germany, the question of American neutrality, the duties of German-Americans both toward the land of their fathers and their adopted country, the mission of America for the peace of Europe. Slight as are these contributions to the literature of the great world conflict that engulfs us, they are at least inspired by the endeavor to be loyal to obligations old and new. Download Mennonite Articles of Faith Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
Excerpt from Mennonite Articles of Faith: As Set Forth in Public Confession of the Church There are many and weighty arguments upon which this our faith rests. Of these we give the fol lowing: (a) The teaching contained in these holy books transcends the laws or the light of nature, but in no wise contradicts them. (b) The contents thereof are al together worthy of God and invite reverence for Him. (c) All that is contained therein serves to the attain ment of holy ends; as the glory of God, the good of one's neighbor, and one's own happiness. (d) The holy writers were persons of distinguished piety and upright ness, who neither evidenced credulity nor sought their own glory, justification or temporal advantage in this work, much less could they obtain such; but their sole object was the glory of God and the salvation and peace of their fellowmen. (e) By means of supernatural mir acles, fulfillment of prophecies, and many other things, God convinced them, and us through them, of their di vine mission. Moreover, everyone who yields himself in honest obedience and submission to the Word of God, finds peace of heart and obtains for himself the assur ance of the truth. Download A Practical German Grammar (Classic Reprint) Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
Excerpt from A Practical German Grammar After the lapse of ten years, during which textbooks have multiplied and the literature of method has greatly increased, I find in this earlier confession of faith nothing that I wish to recant or to modify. There is no doubt room for differ ent kinds of books, varying with the age and ability of the pupil and with the idiosvncrasy of the teacher. Such a thing as the best method does not exist, and it is unwise to pin one's faith too strenuously to any routine or set of dogmas. The capable teacher will always wish to prove all things and hold fast to that which he personally finds to be good. I am convinced, however, that for learners who take up the serious study of German under the conditions ordinarily pre sented by our American high schools and colleges where the problem is the best use of a limited time a book planned on the general lines above described will prove most serviceable. After his martyrdom at the hands of the Gestapo in 1945, Dietrich Bonhoeffer continued his witness in the hearts of Christians around the world. His Letters and Papers from Prison became a prized testimony to Christian faith and courage, read by thousands. Now in Life Together we have Pastor Bonhoeffer's experience of Christian community. This story of a unique fellowship in an underground seminary during the Nazi years reads like one of Paul's letters. It gives practical advice on how life together in Christ can be sustained in families and groups. The role of personal prayer, worship in common, everyday work, and Christian service is treated in simple, almost biblical, words. Life Together is bread for all who are hungry for the real life of Christian fellowship.

This accessible, biblical, and thoughtful work digests years of study and teaching into bite-sized sections. Van Dixhoorn's work is historical and practical in its focus. It deliberately presents readers with more than another survey of Reformed theology; it offers a guide to a particular text, considers its original proof-texts, and seeks to deepen our understanding of each paragraph of the Confession.
