The report presents a functional model of memory based on verbal learning and physiological data. These diverse empirical data are used to describe several basic mechanisms of memory including: (a) separate mechanisms for short-term memory and for long-term memory; (b) the initiation of long-term memory by short-term memory; (c) the properties of short-term memory including autonomous decay, distortion by interference, and a limited capacity; (d) the properties of long-term memory including a consolidation process dependent upon ribonucleic acid (RNA) and enzymes, and a very large capacity; (e) the functional grouping of items in long-term memory; and (f) consolidated (long-term) memories that are reactivated, being brought back into short-term memory. Time courses of these events are described. The report describes how mnemonic techniques work and presents suggestions about how to improve memory training. (Author).

This festschrift represents the proceedings of a conference held in honor of Bennet B. Murdock, one of the foremost researchers and theoreticians on human memory and cognition. A highly renowned investigator respected for both his empirical and theoretical contributions to the field, Murdock summarized and focused a large amount of research activity with his 1974 book Human Memory: Theory and Data. This unique collection of articles addresses many of the issues discussed in his classic text. Divided into five principal sections, its coverage includes: theoretical perspectives on human memory ranging from a biological view to an exposition of the value of formal models; recent progress in the study of processes in immediate memory and recognition memory; and new developments in componential and distributed approaches to the modeling of human memory. Each section concludes with an integrative commentary provided by some of Murdock’s eminent colleagues from the University of Toronto. Thus, this book offers a diversity of perspectives on contemporary topics in the discipline, and will be of interest to students and scholars in all branches of cognitive science.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 18th EPIA Conference on Artificial Intelligence, EPIA 2017, held in Porto, Portugal, in September 2017. The 69 revised full papers and 2 short papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from a total of 177 submissions. The papers are organized in 16 tracks devoted to the following topics: agent-based modelling for criminological research (ABM4Crime), artificial intelligence in cyber-physical and distributed embedded systems (AICPDES), artificial intelligence in games (AIG), artificial intelligence in medicine (AIM), artificial intelligence in power and energy systems (AIPES), artificial intelligence in transportation systems (AITS), artificial life and evolutionary algorithms (ALEA), ambient intelligence and affective environments (AmIA), business applications of artificial intelligence (BAAI), intelligent robotics (IROBOT), knowledge discovery and business intelligence (KDBI), knowledge representation and reasoning (KRR), multi-agent systems: theory and applications (MASTA), software engineering for autonomous and intelligent systems (SE4AIS), social simulation and modelling (SSM), and text mining and applications (TeMA).
