Excerpt from A Descriptive Bibliography: Of the Most Important Books in the English Language, Relating to the Art History of Engraving and the Collecting of Prints Many books have been written about Print Collecting and the Art and History of Engraving. Some of them are very exhaustive, some are models of learning and accuracy, and all are an endless source of pleasure and profitable information to the collector of prints and the student of the literature relating thereto. One desiring technical information can find important works dealing fully with all branches of the art of engraving, and the general collector, or the collector of prints by or after particular artists, can find accurate and comprehensive lists and catalogues minutely describing the various prints and their states. There are dictionaries of artists, of monograms, watermarks, and marks of print-collectors, histories, biographies, and bibliographies - general and special - and in many languages. The number of English books on the subject is large, but one must consult those in other languages for information relative to some branches. For marks and monograms of engravers one turns to Nagler (German), for watermarks to Briquet (French), as there are no English books dealing in a comprehensive way with these subjects. On the other hand some English books have not their equal abroad; for instance, Fagan's "Collectors' Marks" is the only one on the subject, and Hind's "Short History of Engraving and Etching," and Mrs. Frankau's "Eighteenth Century Colour Prints," are better than many excellent similar books published abroad.
