Excerpt from A Critical History of the Late American War My dear Sirs, - According to Dr. Mahan's wish I have read over the portion of the proofs of his work which you have furnished me with. It seems to me that his book will prove both interesting and instructive to those who wish to trace out the causes which have led to the success or failure of campaigns, and how battles have been lost and won. Although the Doctor is not a military man, he seems to have studied carefully the science of strategy as it has been developed at different periods, and applies his knowledge in indicating where established principles have been deviated from. He compares, plainly and practically, what he conceives might have been done in accordance with such principles, with what was actually done; the results in the latter case having now become matters of history. The author appears to have been familiar with the ground and scenes he describes so graphically, and to have been also fully furnished with all details relating to the strength, positions, etc., of the forces engaged. First published in 1866, this book offers a trenchant critique of the conduct of the Civil War and its aftermath, from the perspective of a committed abolitionist. Mahan takes to task the political and military leaders of the North and South alike, and argues that the struggle was ultimately won by the moral force of the Union cause. Although controversial in its day, his argument still resonates with contemporary debates about the meaning and legacy of the Civil War. A must-read for anyone interested in the politics and culture of this pivotal period in American history. Excerpt from History of the Late War Between the United States and Great Britain The work here presented to the public, after passing through arge editions, had been for years entirely out of circulation, when the Publishers, urged by its continued popularity, prevailed on the Author to prepare it for a sixth edition. This last impression having gone off with remarkable rapidity, the Publishers have now stereo typed the work, atter again submitting it to the ordeal of a careful and scrutinizing revision.
