Excerpt from A Critical Exposition of Bergson's Philosophy The purpose of this work is not exposition, but criticism. Professor Bergson's thought is elaborated only to such an extent as to ensure that the criticism shall be intelligible. I am conscious that in outlining the main ideas of his philosophy I have stripped them of the brilliant metaphorical dress in which Bergson himself has clothed them, and divorced them from the charm of a peculiarly flexible and graceful literary style. My only defence is that metaphor is not always conducive to clearness, and that illustration is apt to be confused with argument. My aim has been to present clearly the root ideas of his philosophy, so far as they appear in the work which he has made public; to examine their validity; and to consider their value as a contribution to modern philosophic thought. Excerpt from Bergson for Beginners: A Summary of His Philosophy The aim of this book is to give the reader a general sketch of the philosophy of Professor Henri Bergson, in the order of its development and in the simplest manner that is consistent with accuracy, and so to introduce him to the original works and more especially to the excellent English translations. The summary or synopsis of Time and Free Will is on a scale sufficient to show the nature of the argument; it has been made fuller than that of the later books in view of the obvious importance of the Esmi for the student, since it gives an exposition of the ideas which underlie the Whole of Bergson's philosophy. My summary was made from the French, but I have compared it with the English translation in order to avoid any confusion in technical terms. That I should have ventured to condense so eloquent and (if I may add a per sonal opinion) so generally cogent an argument must find its apology and vindication in a desire to lead others to his writings. Those who meet with obscurities or suspect misconceptions have thus an easy remedy. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Bergson: An Exposition and Criticism From the Point of View of St. Thomas Aquinas If we examine the various activities of the time-spirit, say in the spheres of literature, of economics, of sociology, of art, or of religion, we shall find that they may be summed up in the principle of mans self-perfectibility. Thus the chief characteristic of the time-spirit is an exaggerated subjectivism and individualism. The law of reason is set aside to make place for the predominant feeling. Sensation becomes the norm of conduct. But even healthy sensation is not of sufficient variety to provide man with constant satisfaction. When sensation has been made the leading factor in a mans life, then he soon has recourse to morbid sensation, for the sane and healthy feelings soon become exhausted.
