Excerpt from Health Studies Applied Physiology and Hygiene Anatomy and physiology, except in their simple elements, are of doubtful value for young pupils. But the study of how to keep well, or hygiene, is something that every boy and girl, man and woman, must learn or else must suffer for his ignorance. Hygiene, properly presented. Deals with things of everyday life. No pupil in the schools is too young to begin to learn how to adjust himself successfully to his surroundings. This learning how to meet our environment, as Professor Huxley long ago said, constitutes a liberal education. Many of the school texts have been based too exclusively on physiology, or have dealt largely with elementary anatomy, and have been difficult of comprehension to the pupils. Health studies differs materially from such books. It makes hygiene the primary study, and introduces only a sufficient amount of physiology to form a sound basis for the study of health principles. If this small book succeeds in helping its readers to think for themselves; if it encourages them in making their own definitions; if it leads them to realize that it is not ignorance but knowledge which leads to health, and there fore happiness; and finally, if it helps to prepare them to meet practical life as they will find it, - then its appear ance will have been justified. Excerpt from First Lessons in Physiology and Hygiene: For the Use of Schools 1. Physiology. - The term Physiology is derived from Greek words which mean a story about nature. At first physiology included all kinds of natural study; but, as the word is now employed, it is the science which treats of the uses and actions of living objects. Human physiology is a study of what is done by and in the living human body. It is a study about our selves, about the uses and actions of all parts of our bodies - head and trunk, hands and feet, brain and nerves, stomach, heart, and lungs. It teaches us about the movements of the body; about feeling, seeing, hearing, smelling, tasting, and thinking; about eat ing, breathing, keeping warm, growing, wasting, and dying. Animals and plants represent living nature. Minerals represent lifeless nature. Animals and plants are born, live, grow, and pass away according. Excerpt from Primary Lessons in Human Physiology and Hygiene for Schools On the other hand, the pupils are led incidentally to observe some of the most apparent phenomena connected with the life processes - the action and uses of the bones, the muscles, the skin, the heart, the lungs, the brain. They are shown the importance of wholesome food, healthful exercise, pure air, and temperate habits of living. They are induced to learn, partly from direct instruction, partly by observation, why one course of action is conducive to health and happiness while another leads to discomfort, sickness, and perhaps an imperfect manhood or womanhood. The effects of alcohol and tobacco in weakening the bodily powers and diminishing one's chances for success and long life are explained in a simple, and yet forceful, man ner. In the preparation of each of the lessons, the author has constantly asked himself these questions How much of this subject ought young children to know? How much of it can they wisely comprehend? What direct use can they make of this information to the betterment of themselves, both now and later in life? He has occasionally permitted himself to repeat some important statements more than once, but in a different form, to the end that the facts may be the.
