Excerpt from A Course in Experimental Psychology, Vol. 1: Sensation and Perception Most of the experiments are demonstrational in char acter, and aimed at qualitative rather than quantitative results, even when for convenience they have been given a quantitative form. Precautions necessary for results of the latter sort have therefore been lightly touched upon. The setting of the experiments is generally the simplest, and the apparatus the least expensive, that promised satis factory results. That no mistakes have been made, even from these points of view, is more than I can hope. I have been careful in the selection, however, and let the book pass from my hands with the hope that it may prove helpful both to those who have psychological courses to give and to those who shall by and by supplant it by a better one. Excerpt from A Text-Book of Experimental Psychology In endeavouring to supply this want, I do not attempt to offer a systematic Psychology. On the contrary, I assume that the student is already familiar with the elements of general psychology.1 He may have had the opportunity of attending an introductory course of lectures on the subject which were accompanied by demonstrations, and in that case he will have observed how artificial is the line of cleavage between general and experimental psychology. Excerpt from An Introduction to Experimental Psychology: In Relation to Education The literature devoted to new researches of this nature is steadily increasing,2 and one Of the chief values of a course in experimental psychology is that the student is thus enabled to understand such literature more easily and to appreciate it better. His training also will give him greater skill in sifting the wheat from the chaff: for it must be admitted that a good deal of work which shows faulty method and immature and hasty conclusions still succeeds in getting into print. Excerpt from An Elementary Laboratory Course in Psychology IT has been our aim in preparing this manual to describe the experiments in such a manner that students who have had only an introductory course in psychology may be able to perform them without further assistance. With this in mind we have tried to give full and minute descriptions even to the point of explain ing what may seem obvious to many. We have also given exact directions in regard to the recording of results, even to the extent of supplying models for the tables when necessary, for we consider that training in the systematic arrangement of results is one of the purposes of an experimental course. The selection of the experiments has been conditioned by the following practical and theoretical requirements. It is the purpose of the following two experiments to ascertain this persistence Of Visual sensations and to measure it. Excerpt from General Experimental Psychology If, then, the validity of concepts in a science depends so much on the validity of the operations on which they rest, there ought to be certain well defined rules or cri teria to guide us in our experimental operations. These will be brought out in an examination of the methods of experimentation. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Outlines for Experimental Psychology The only justification for the existence of an Outline for Experimental Psychology is to be found in its usefulness. In order to be useful, such a manual should serve several distinct purposes. It should encourage rather than inhibit the enthusiasm of the student who is beginning the study of human nature under controlled conditions; it should assist in giving such a student a general and more or less systematic View of the wide field of psycho logical inquiry; it should constitute a guide rather than an author ity; it should be detailed enough to enable the instructor to give his attention to the student rather than to the implements; with all this, it should allow sufficient freedom to avoid becoming itself the main object of investigation. The outline here presented has seemed to serve these various purposes in my own teaching. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
