Excerpt from A Compendium of Human Comparative Pathological Anatomy I Feel no need of apologizing to the Profession for the translation of a work, the value of which I am convinced will be fully appreciated by every reader into whose hands it may chance to come. The importance of the subject on which it treats, the advantage of shewing at one view what has been already done in pathology, and the facility it renders to the student of classing such additional facts as he may meet with in his reading or experience, require no comment; and, as such, I trust it will be found no mean help in professional inquiry. The additional references given by the author in his Appendix I have incorporated in the body of the work, as he proposed; and to these I have added further references and notices of cases which have come within my own knowledge, all of which are bracketed and marked T.to prevent confusion. Excerpt from The Journal of Anatomy and Physiology Normal and Pathological, Human and Comparative, 1897, Vol. 31 It is needless to say that this theory has found both adherents and opponents. Among the latter, some maintain that the objects in question are undoubtedly human, others insist that they are as certainly the remains of a large ape. Still another group of critics regard the skull-cap as simian, and the femur as human; averring that the proofs of the remains belonging to one animal are insufficient and inconclusive. For the purpose of bringing forward some additional informa tion which may contribute to the solution of this much-debated problem, I have lately devoted special attention to the study of the femora in various modern races, both savage and civilised. Excerpt from The Human Species Considered From the Standpoints of Comparative Anatomy, Physiology, Pathology and Bacteriology IN his work on the Human Species, Hopf compares the structure, functions and diseases of man with those of animals. It must not be taken, however, that the volume is simply a collection of facts and details. A glance at the headlines of the pages will reveal the wide extent of the ground covered. After discussing the distribution of mankind, the ancestors of man, the strue ture and functions of the various tissues, Hopf deals with such interesting questions as psychology, the origin of the mind, emotions and their expression, social customs, marriage, communism, modesty, shame, religion and art. He then proceeds to consider the diseases of man and animals, the parasites common or peculiar to each, and concludes with a fascinating chapter on self help in animals and primitive man. Realising that such aspects of the subject will appeal to the general reader. The text has been shorn of scientific terminology as much as possible.
