This study investigated the academic progress of special admit football players compared to general admit football players at a private, Division I university in the western United States. Using mixed methods, the researcher quantitatively compared the two groups in terms of credits enrolled, credits attained, GPA and progress toward degree. The researcher also interviewed special admit football players to determine their perceptions of academic support service. Data answer the quantitative and qualitative study questions. Most notably, the researcher found that, while general admit football players had higher GPAs than the special admit athletics, the special admit athletes experienced the same amount of progress toward degree as their regular admit teammates. Furthermore, participant interviews revealed that athletes most value the learning specialists and tutors within the university’s support service framework. Discussion includes implications for practice.

The purpose of this case study is to gain insight into the academic, athletic and social experiences of specially admitted student-athletes in order to better understand what contributes to their lower academic performance in high school but also to further understand what obstacles they experience during their college academic careers and, importantly, what protective factors contribute to some students persisting through to graduation. Participants (N=5) included Division I specially admitted scholarship football players who graduated within six years of entering a college in the Pacific Northwest. They were interviewed to get a better understanding of the factors that contributed to them being specially admitted, obstacles they faced academically and what they identified as promoting in persisting to graduation. It was found outside influences that impacted high school GPA and SAT scores more than ability therefore those scores should not solely be relied on for admission practices and NCAA initial eligibility standards. Obstacles to persistence included, sport schedule, overall football experience (including injuries, coaching changes and loss), focus on NFL as a career excluding other options, entering college with a lack of study skills and not understanding college expectation hindering transition to college. In addition, support outside of athletic, specialized academic support services and personal character traits and belief promoted academic success. Implications for student athlete support services were discussed with recommendations for specific programming.

This study was an investigation of academic outcomes for student athletes who did or did not participate in an athlete-specific freshman Summer Bridge program in a private Division I university in the western United States. Analysis of data across five years yielded results regarding fall, winter, and cumulative GPA; and progress toward degree for special admit and general admit student athletes. Data indicate significant differences between groups in terms of GPA and progress toward degree for the first year. However, there were no significant main interaction between time and group as measured by differential slopes over time according to group membership in terms of semester GPA. The discussion includes application for practice and further research.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the different stereotypes that individuals, within a university's general student population, held toward student-athletes and non-athlete students admitted to the university on a special admission basis (students admitted with requirements less than the stated minimum for admission). Two studies, one qualitative in nature and the other with a quantitative focus, were conducted to assess students' perceptions of special admission students. The results of this study show that students from a university's general population have more of a negative stereotype or perception of athlete special admissions, as compared to a non-athlete special admission student, when interacting in an academic setting. On the other hand, the general student population indicated a more positive perception for allowing special admission to athletes than they did for allowing special admission to non-athlete students.

"Since its inception, collegiate football has had low retention and graduation rates for student-athletes. While admission standards are on the rise at major public universities, many under-prepared student-athletes (football) are admitted each year because they are the 'best' player in the state/country, creating academic disparities. The history, culture and economic success of the university athletic program, especially football, plays a pivotal role in explaining these disparities. The data collected and recorded over the past two decades will demonstrate that there is a growing disparity in the academic preparedness between college students and college student-athletes (football) at 31 Division I (DI) institutions. The GPA (grade point average), SAT (Scholastic Achievement Test) scores, and graduation rates, however, do not accurately measure these discrepancies. The academic deficits of the special admit student-athlete can only be assessed through performance-based measurements of reading, writing and math. Ideally, these assessments should be done much earlier in the education process so that remediation can take place before entering college. Despite the academic support and resources available to special admit student athletes, it is not possible to remediate and take college level degree applicable courses at the same time. The graduation rate of DI football players (50%, 2009) can be explained, then, by the low admission standards that suggest a lack of proficiency in basic academic skills."--Abstract from author supplied metadata.

Her institutional ethnography of one elite athletic and academic institution includes over 100 hours of interviews with college rowers and track & field athletes. She charts the historic and contemporary relationships between colleges, athletics, and white middle-class communities that ensure white suburban youth are advantaged in special athletic admissions. Suburban youth start ahead in college admissions because athletic merit—the competencies desired by university recruiters—requires access to vast familial, communal, and economic resources, all of which are concentrated in their neighborhoods. Their advantages increase as youth, parents, and coaches strategically invest in and engineer novel opportunities to maintain their race and class status. Thus, college sports allow white, middle-class athletes to accelerate their racial and economic advantages through admission to elite universities.
