There is an increasing interest in the use of computer algorithms to identify combinations of parameters which optimise the energy performance of buildings. For such problems, the objective function can be multi-modal and needs to be approximated numerically using building energy simulation programs. As these programs contain iterative solution algorithms, they introduce discontinuities in the numerical approximation to the objective function. Metaheuristics often work well for such problems, but their convergence to a global optimum cannot be established formally. Moreover, different algorithms tend to be suited to particular classes of optimization problems. To shed light on this issue we compared the performance of two metaheuristics, the hybrid CMA-ES/HDE and the hybrid PSO/HJ, in minimizing standard benchmark functions and real-world building energy optimization problems of varying complexity. From this we find that the CMA-ES/HDE performs well on more complex objective functions, but that the PSO/HJ more consistently identifies the global minimum for simpler objective functions. Both identified similar values in the objective functions arising from energy simulations, but with different combinations of model parameters. This may suggest that the objective function is multi-modal. The algorithms also correctly identified some non-intuitive parameter combinations that were caused by a simplified control sequence of the building energy system that does not represent actual practice, further reinforcing their utility.

We consider expensive optimization problems, that is to say problems where each evaluation of the objective function is expensive in terms of computing time, consumption of resources, or cost. This often happens in situations where the objective function is not available in analytic form, e.g. crash tests, best composition of chemicals, or soil contamination. Due to this lack of analytical representation we also speak about 'black box functions'. In order to use as few function evaluations as possible within the optimization process, a sophisticated strategy to determine the evaluation points is necessary. In this thesis we present an algorithm which belongs to the class of the wellknown Radial basis function (RBF)-methods. RBF-methods usually incorporate subproblems which are difficult to solve exact. In order to solve these problems exact, we developed a Branch & Bound routine. This routine computes lower bounds by using the property of 'conditional positive definiteness' of the RBF. We present a formula for the inverse of a blockmatrix with solely singular diagonal blocks. We also present a partitioning rule for multidimensional rectangles, which gives much freedom in the choice of the bisection point subject to preserve the important property of 'exhaustiveness'. We tested our algorithm and present results for both expensive problems with only box constraints and expensive problems with general convex constraints.

Global optimization is concerned with the characterization and computation of global minima or maxima of nonlinear functions. Such problems are widespread in mathematical modeling of real world systems for a very broad range of applications. The applications include economies of scale, fixed charges, allocation and location problems, quadratic assignment and a number of other combinatorial optimization problems. More recently it has been shown that certain aspects of VLSI chip design and database problems can be formulated as constrained global optimization problems with a quadratic objective function. Although standard nonlinear programming algorithms will usually obtain a local minimum to the problem , such a local minimum will only be global when certain conditions are satisfied (such as f and K being convex).
