In order to utilize digital images effectively, specific techniques are needed to reduce the number of bits required for their representation. This Tutorial Text provides the groundwork for understanding these image compression tecniques and presents a number of different schemes that have proven useful. The algorithms discussed in this book are concerned mainly with the compression of still-frame, continuous-tone, monochrome and color images, but some of the techniques, such as arithmetic coding, have found widespread use in the compression of bilevel images. Both lossless (bit-preserving) and lossy techniques are considered. A detailed description of the compression algorithm proposed as the world standard (the JPEG baseline algorithm) is provided. The book contains approximately 30 pages of reconstructed and error images illustrating the effect of each compression technique on a consistent image set, thus allowing for a direct comparison of bit rates and reconstucted image quality. For each algorithm, issues such as quality vs. bit rate, implementation complexity, and susceptibility to channel errors are considered.

Download Flow Phenomena in Nature: Inspiration, learning and application Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
Do we have an adequate understanding of fluid dynamics phenomena in nature and evolution, and what physical models do we need? What can we learn from nature to stimulate innovations in thinking as well as in engineering applications? Concentrating on flight and propulsion, this unique and accessible book compares fluid dynamics solutions in nature with those in engineering. The respected international contributors present up-to-date research in an easy to understand manner, giving common viewpoints from fields such as zoology, engineering, biology, fluid mechanics and physics. This transdisciplinary approach eliminates barriers and opens wider perspectives to both of the challenging questions above. Contents: Applications in Engineering and Medicine; Inspiration from Nature; Steady and Unsteady Fluid Dynamics; Specific Numerical and Experimental Methods

Download A Comparative Study of Still Image Compression Models Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
Compares the following compression models: joint photographic expert group (JPEG), embedded zerotree wavelet (EZW), vector quantization (VQ), discrete cosine transform based vector quantization (DCTVQ), modified DCT-based vector quantization (MDCTVQ), wavelet-based vector quantization (WVQ). Uses a new algorithm to perform image compression which exploits the benefits of both wavelet transform and vector quantization in order to tap the correlation between wavelet coefficients of different subbands in the same spatial location rather than only in the same orientation.
