This classic Lutheran commentary on the Old Testament, Minor Prophets, by Dr. Theodore Laetsch, opens the work of Jeremiah, with a focus on the fact that he wrote by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of Christ testifying through him (1 Peter 1:11).

Excerpt from The Minor Prophets: With a Commentary Explanatory and Practical and Introductions to the Several Books To this end, it is our purpose to use those more thoughtful writers Of all times, who have professedly, or, as far as we know, incidentally developed the meaning of portions or texts of the sacred volume, men who understood Holy Scripture through that same Spirit by Whom it was written, to whom prayer, meditation, and a sanctified life laid Open its meaning. For He Who first gave to man the words of eternal life still hides their meaning from those who are wise and prudent in their own eyes, and giveth wisdom to the simple. Lord, to whom shall we go? Thou hast the words of eternal life. The reading Of the Scriptures is the Opening of Heaven. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. David Pawson looks at the messages of these so-called “minor prophets” and says: I do not like that term. To God all prophets are important, whether they speak a little or a lot. Even if God only gave you three words for somebody else, that is prophecy. You don’t need to do it at length for fifty years as some prophets did. There are some prophets in the Old Testament who only speak once, and then, as far as we know, they disappear; but they have given a message from God. This is all a prophet is: someone who has heard a message and passes it on to the right people. It is such a simple ministry. You don’t need to be theologically educated; you don’t need to be a public speaker. In fact, God seems to entrust this ministry to those who don’t have a gift of oratory. It is exciting to hear ordinary folk, who would never be able to get up into a pulpit and preach a sermon, hear from God and pass on a word from him.
