Excerpt from The Apostles' Creed: In the Light of Modern Discussion I rejoice to believe that we are all getting nearer to Christ and therefore nearer to one another. In using the ancient creeds and seeking to understand them we need not be thought unbrotherly or divisive the Church has a common and precious inheritance. I am glad to adopt the words of the Unitarian, Dr E. H. Sears. In his book The Heart of Christ, he says: Those who acknowledge Jesus Christ as the supreme authority and guide, and enter more into his all-revealing mind, are making progress toward the harmonizing truths which he represents. However wide apart they may be at the start their progress is ever on converging lines. Essential truth becomes more and more central and manifest, the'non-essential falls away to its subordinate place, and orthodox and unorthodox move alike toward a higher and higher unity. It is not that one sect is making a conquest of the others, but Jesus Christ is making a conquest of us all There is no rea son then to be afraid to know what the Church believes. Download The Meaning of the Creed Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
Excerpt from The Meaning of the Creed: Papers on the Apostles Creed The Meaning of the Creed is the title given to fourteen papers on the articles of the Apostles' Creed now collected in a single volume. These papers were printed first of all as separate tracts, under the supervising editorship of the two Regius Professors of Divinity in the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge, Dr. H. S. Holland and Dr. V. H. Stanton; and they were issued in direct connection with the National Mission of Repentance and Hope, as part of the literature produced under its auspices. That Mission, as has been stated many times, was and is (for it is still in progress) a Mission of the Church, the aim of which is "to call the men and women of England to earnest and honest repentance of our sins and shortcomings as a nation, and to claim that in the Living Christ - in the loyal acceptance of Him as the Lord of all life, individual and social - lies the one sure Hope in the light of which the strain, the sorrows and the sacrifices of the war, and the task of renewal and reconstruction when the war is over, may be faced." Download Historic Christianity and the Apostles Creed (Classic Reprint) Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
Excerpt from Historic Christianity and the Apostles Creed The first part of the book was prepared for three Sunday addresses in St. Margaret's, Westminster, during June, 1918; the third I was prevented from delivering, but all appeared in the Guardian whence by the courtesy of the Editor they are reprinted, substantially in their original form. The addresses on the Apostles' Creed were given in Great St. Mary's, Cambridge, during Lent, 1919; the development of thought is essentially the same, but identity does not extend further.
