Excerpt from Collection of Novels, Vol. 3: Sparsa Coegi The following little Novel was written in the reign of Charles the Second, by Mrs. Aphra Behn. The scene of this Piece is laid in Portugal, and the manners, as well as the stile, bear some resemblance to the ancient romance; where, though the personages are real, their adventures are fictitious. To the Author, therefore, must be imputed the merit of the Fable, from whence this very just and delicate moral may be drawn: That the indulgence of an unlawful passion in the mind, though restrained within the strictest bounds of conduct, renders the heart incapable of exercising its vitrues, or discharging its duties cordially; consequently, our dearest connections become sufferers from our estrangement, while the natural tendency of the human mind to palliate its failings, is too apt to flatter us that we remain innocent, because we are not intentionally guilty. His novels and poetry are still read, and many of his works remain classics of both English-language literature and of Scottish literature. Famous titles include Ivanhoe, Rob Roy, The Lady of the Lake, Waverley, The Heart of Midlothian and The Bride of Lammermoor.
