Excerpt from A Circular From the Land Office, Descriptive of the Public Lands of Maine, 1858 By the above mentioned routes, goods are now carried from Bangor to Pres ue Isle, one hundred and lift -hrs miles, at about thirty dollars per ton, and rom Bangor to Ashland, one undred and forty-five miles, by the Aroos took road, at thirty-five to forty dollars per ton. Such rates add so materially to the cost of supplies brought thither, that it is no wonder if a cheapo? Mode of communication be sought.
