"A Chronology of Librarianship, 1960-2000 continues the work of Josephine Smith and her original Chronology of Librarianship (Scarecrow, 1968). It updates and completes Smith's work through 2000, paying special attention to the progress made on technological and international fronts that has significantly altered the role and function of librarians. The ramifications of this new level of global connectedness, especially the rise of the Internet in the 1990s, are of primary concern for author Jeffrey M. Wilhite." "The literature Wilhite covers is taken from various spheres of librarianship and ranges over multiple continents. This broad scope lends itself to wide use by scholars and students of both library history and library literature. The chronology is presented in a dictionary format and separated into decades, complemented by a comprehensive bibliography and subject and name indexes." --Book Jacket.

This work presents the history and impact of the seven most important progressive library organizations worldwide--in Austria, Germany, South Africa, Sweden, United Kingdom, and two in the United States. Each organization is considered within its national context, and in fact, the English word "organization" does not quite fit the nature of all of the groups. The South African organization, LIWO, was transitional in that it helped bring South African librarianship from apartheid to majority rule and then disbanded. The other organizations or their successors are still working in one form or another. Some of the organizations have had or continue to have vibrant local chapters, though many of the original activists have recently retired or died. The author has interviewed many of them at a time when they were assessing their life work, and handing off to new generations.
