Excerpt from Makers of North Carolina History The title of this book sufficiently explains its purpose and its scope. In it I have emphasized, as far as possi ble, the personalities of the men who have made our history rather than the events in which they were con cerned. The latter can be studied in the narrative histories of the State which of necessity must present but little or nothing of the former. Of course I do not mean that the great events in which these men were leaders have been neglected. The child who studies this book will acquire as much knowledge of the general history of the State as the average child in the grades is capable of assimilating. This book has been written under the impression that the children of North Caro lina have more knowledge of the great events of our history than of the great leaders; and under the con viction that knowledge of the latter is equally as important and even more interesting, to children, at least, than the former. Excerpt from Grandfather's Tales of North Carolina History, Vol. 9 Then we thought it might be a useful offering to the public and to our schools and perhaps give a new stimulus to the State love Of the rising generation and cause them to know more Of their illustrious progenitors, and to emulate their virtues and their patriotic deeds. One boulder was in our pathway. It costs labor to pre pare a book for publication. But we were raised to hard work and were never afraid Of it. But, in addition to that, there's much expense in money in getting a book be fore the public, and we never had the gift Of money-get ting and we were largely gifted with the talent for getting rid of it, which talent, we honestly confess, we have never hid in a napkin, but cultivated assiduously by constant practice - that is to say, when we had it to get rid of. However, we have never been an Elijah that the ravens had to feed. SO we looked around to accomplish by our wits what our purse refused to do. Excerpt from History of North Carolina, Vol. 1: With Maps and Illustrations In entering upon his work, the writer avails himself of the opportunity briefly to explain his proposed plan, as in some of its features, it departs from established historical models. A mere chronologically accurate narrative of important public events does not in his view constitute history; though of it, such a narrative properly forms a part. He has supposed that the real history of a State is to be read in the gradual progress of its peo ple in intelligence, refinement, industry, wealth, taste, civilization, &c. The public events that transpire are but the exponents of the condition of the inhabitants, in these and other particulars. Excerpt from The History of North Carolina, From the Earliest Period, Vol. 1 If it be true, that history is the best mean oftea'ching and exercising the minds of those who destine themselves to public life, this advantage will, more certainly and eminently be found in the annals of the country, which is to be the theatre of one's actions: especially, if these annals present the rare and interest ing spectacle of a handful of adventurers.
