This case study examined the phenomenon, through a basic interpretive approach, of 13 students who participated in a short- term study abroad program at a community college. Participants shared experiences from their programs that provided meaning to their lives and how that meaning has shaped their life socially, academically, professionally, and personally. The goal of the study was to describe their experiences of community college students who participate in a short-term study abroad program, describe how a short-term study abroad program at a community college impacts a student's life, understand how short-term study abroad programs in community colleges are moving toward the outcomes of long-term programs, and determine the impact this study will have on senior level administrators from Community Colleges for International Development and other government agencies affiliated with study abroad programs. Data were collected from 13 participants via interviews, travel journals, trip reports, and photographs taken while the students were studying abroad. The themes identified in the data were: International experiences encourage participants to study abroad; student perception of faculty leading the study abroad program is key to study abroad participation; expanded worldview through human interaction; studying abroad produces a desire to travel internationally; participants earn intellectual, social, professional, and personal capital as a result of studying abroad. These themes suggest that short-term study abroad programs that use the Troika model produced a significant impact on students who participate in them.

This case study examined how participating in a short-term education abroad program fostered transformative learning for a small group of community college students. As a participant-observer, I utilized ethnographic methods, including interviews, observations, and document analysis, to understand students' perceptions of their experiences studying in Peru for two weeks. The following questions guided the research: How do participants describe their perceptions of their experiences studying abroad? How do participants' biographies impact their perceptions of their experiences? How do programmatic features influence participants' perceptions of studying abroad? To investigate these questions, I utilized Glaser and Strauss' (1973) constant comparative method, in which I systematically and simultaneously collected and analyzed the data. Kiely's (2005) transformative learning model for service-learning served as a frame through which I analyzed participants' experiences. Four key themes concerning learning processes and outcomes emerged from this analysis. The new relationships that students forged and the intensive language classes provided the most impactful learning experiences. As a result of studying abroad, the participants reflected on and reassessed their own lives and expressed a desire to engage in future international travel. This study's findings illustrate the transformative potential of short-term study abroad programs for community college students. Previous short-term study abroad research has primarily investigated the outcomes of students' participation in four- to eight-week programs at four-year institutions; few studies have documented community college students' learning processes in very short education programs. The insights gained from this study contribute to the extant study abroad literature and inform community college administrators and faculty as they design and implement education abroad programs at their institutions.

"Short-term, faculty-led education abroad programs are steadily becoming the leading experience for students to actively participate in an educational, overseas experience. As the number of these programs increase, so do the concerns for addressing safety within groups in a foreign country. This research identified student development theories related to study abroad, including examples of small group-learning strategies and successful community strategies as the foundations for creating community and a community contract as a strategy to mitigate risk during short-term faculty-led programs. Case study methodology was employed, and six emergent themes were identified through the triangulation of five interview participants; forty-five individual blogs from 11 participants; and 30 direct participant observations. Evidence ultimately showed that responsibility and safety were linked to the process of creating community and a community contract, which helped to mitigate risk while students participated in a short-term faculty-led education abroad experience."--leaf ii.

The study examined student choice to participate in short-term study abroad at Graceland University. The institution has short-term study abroad participation rates higher than the national average and a 40 year history of engaging in this high-impact educational practice. The mixed methods research included statistical analysis of ten years of student level data and interviews with students actively engaged in the choice process. Descriptive statistics, t-test, and logistic regression were used to examine the relationship between demographic, academic, and financial characteristics and participation in the short-term study abroad program. Student interviews were analyzed to identify factors influential in the choice process and to better understand why those factors were influential. The conceptual model used to frame the study was Perna's integrated model of college choice. In this research the model is applied to a student choice after enrollment at a college or university. In the integrated regression models only academic characteristics were significantly related to the choice to participate in short-term study abroad. The qualitative results of the study indicated a complex choice process that was strongly influenced by a supportive institutional culture surrounding the program. Faculty mentoring and peer mentoring of students engaged in the choice process were also important in the decision to participate in a short-term study abroad trip. The findings are informative for study abroad practitioners and institutions seeking to increase participation in study abroad.
