The Byzantine period is one of the less known periods in the history of Palestine. On the one hand, there is a wealth of archaeological evidence, albeit not in a final form; while, on the other hand, there are few historical sources. There is evidence of prosperity, but also testimonies of economic and demographic deterioration. The book offers a comprehensive historical framework describing the period, based on all the available material. In the absence of historical sources, full use must be made of the archaeological data; until the present, however, chronological definitions have not been determined for "Byzantine" pottery vessels. The book makes use of a new methodological tool: quantitative numismatic data.

During the summers from 1958 through 1968 a Harvard-Cornell team of archeologists excavated the site of ancient Sardis, metropolis of Asia Minor and fabled capital of the Lydian Kingdom. Byzantine Coins is the first volume in a series of reports and monographs in which the results of these excavations will be published. George Bates provides a catalogue of 1,234 coins and one seal dating from A.D. 491 to 1282. His monograph meticulously describes each coin and contains sharply detailed reproductions of the 121 best preserved coins as well as maps of the area and notes which describe where each coin was found.

This book forms a final report on the underwater excavations I directed at Yassi Ada, Turkey, during the summers of 1961 through 1964 for the University Museum of the University of Pennsylvania. The excavation was the first to have been completed on the floor of the Mediterranean of a wreck with substantial hull remains. This pioneering work required the ingenuity, effort, and generosity of many people and institutions. The seventh- century ship was chosen for primary excavation not only for its lesser depth, which allowed longer working dives, but also because Throckmorton had uncovered traces of its timbers just beneath the sand and because it was more intelligible from the outset: a stack of concreted iron anchors, lying across the cargo at its upper end, suggested the forward part of the ship pointing up the slope, toward Yassi Ada, while a mass of broken terra-cotta tiles and cooking ware suggested the galley--and, presumably, the stern--at the deeper end of the site.

This illustrated handbook presents a concise history of the development of the coinage of the early Arab caliphate in the seventh century. The historical introduction, which includes descriptions of all the basic types, is followed by a summary catalogue of the recently acquired collection of Arab-Byzantine coins at Dumbarton Oaks.
