Excerpt from A Brief History of the War This bulletin makes no pretense of being either a thorough or a final treatment of the war. Its purpose is merely to gather in concise form the more significant phases of the war, so that these may be taught in the schools of Texas. A heavy responsibility rests upon all teachers in our present crisis, for their instruction will have great in uence upon the opinions of their pupils. Amid the bitterness and hatred that war develops, it becomes increasingly necessary for as many people as possible to keep clearly in mind the main issues of this con ict. Disloyalty and intrigue are abroad, and Ameri cans should one and all so understand our part in this war that no doubt or faintheartedness can turn us aside from what we have undertaken to do. Excerpt from A Reference History of the War This volume has been prepared in order to meet the ever increasing demand for a reliable authentic history of the war in all its phases in one volume. Almost all the histories of the war that have been published to date have been written on specific aspects of the tremendous struggle. Those that cover the entire subject have been set before the public in many volumes, and, as a consequence, demand a large amount of time on the part of the reader. After the armistice was signed and the Peace Conference finished, the publishers of this volume determined to offer the reading public a compact history of the war in a single volume. This has been done with the result that a comprehensive but not detailed history of the war has been produced. It is narrated in an entertaining, scholarly style. The various chapter headings, War in Brief, Underlying Causes of the War, Military Operations, Naval Operations, Aerial Operations, Destruction of Art and Architecture, Alleged Atrocities, Peace Terms and War Aims, Neutral Nations, Economic and Financial Aspects, Peace Conference and Peace Treaties, etc., will show at a glance the scope of the volume. An index and bibliography of the most accessible books on the war have also been included. The material for the history of the war was gathered from the most reliable contemporary sources, and was edited from time to time in order to include new facts that were unearthed or to delete material that had been assumed true at the time it was incorporated but later proved contrary to fact. The basic material presented for the first two years was contributed by several members of the staff of the New International Encyclopaedia, namely, Colonel Cornelis De Witt Wilcox, U. S. A.; Professor F. H. Hankins; Professor Nelson P. Mead; Captain Lewis Sayre Van Duzer, U. S. N.; Mr. Herbert T. Wade; and Mr. Irwin Scofield Guernsey. The bulk of the work has been done by Mr. Irwin Scofield Guernsey. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from A Short History of the Great World War AT first sight this short history may seem a superfluous addition to the literature of the War. Several exhaustive histories, written by competent authorities, have appeared in numerous parts and volumes, and there are many smaller works dealing with special phases of the war. But there are thousands of people who have not had the time or the opportunity to read these works, many of Whom will, perhaps, be glad to have the record of the whole war in a handy form at a moderate price. It may also appeal to repatriated prisoners of war who were only able to follow the course of events through enemy versions, and would like to devote a few hours to reading the complete story. Lastly, there is no doubt that the history and lessons of the Great War will be taught in the schools and colleges of the British Empire, and it is hoped teachers may find this book useful either as a class-book for their pupils or a foundation for their own teaching.
