Excerpt from A Bibliography of South America I have divided my subject into two parts the first contains an alphabetically arranged list of authors with only such works as they have written on South America included beneath their names; the second and more im portant part contains a list of all these works re-arranged and classified under their various subject headings so far as my information on their contents is correct. They are also' classified according to their dates of publication so that the order in which books have followed one another in their various sections may be easily noted. This second part includes every book or magazine article in English upon any subject dealing with South America which has come within my view, and includes many items which for want of further information cannot appear in the first part. This work is the result of many searchings into all sorts of odd places and much labour in arranging and re-arranging the titles under their most suitable subject headings, it was first compiled for the purpose of, gaining some idea of the written available knowledge dealing with Argentina but the necessity for taking a broader view of my subject was soon discovered and I had to extend the originally intended Bibliography of Argentina to the more comprehensive title of South America, justifying the change by including an additional collection of titles of works on the other Republics of this Continent. South America is an area of fascination and study for geographers and other scholars from around the world, and its land and people have played important roles in the discovery and distribution of civilizations, resources, and nations for millennia. The region has long stimulated a large amount of research across the many subdisciplines of geography, and Thomas A. Rumney collects, organizes, and presents as many scholarly publications as possible in The Geography of South America: A Scholarly Guide and Bibliography. Every South American nation is included: Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, French Guiana, Guyana, Paraguay, Peru, Surinam, Uruguay, and Venezuela. Beginning with an overview of the region as a whole, successive chapters, one per nation, are divided by specific subdisciplines of geography: cultural, social, economic, historical, physical and environmental, political, and urban. Each section is then divided by document type: atlases, books, book chapters, articles from scholarly journals, master’s theses, and doctoral dissertations. Although the majority of entries focus on English-language works, selected entries written in Spanish, French, German, and other languages are also included (with the entry titles translated into English and noted accordingly).
