The 10th volume of the Profiles in Healing series presents the male and female healers from Bali, called Balians; discusses their healing practices; and shares the visions that have defined their way of life. In addition, the Lontar--a sacred text consisting of etchings on dried palm leaves--is presented and its medicinal teachings are explained. Illustrated by beautiful and mystic photos and drawings and accompanied by an audio CD of traditional music and readings from the Lontar, this books provides a penetrating examination of the ancient healing practices of Bali. Life stories, personal accounts of visions, and detailed descriptions of medical practice are interspersed throughout.

Jero Tapakan is a popular village spirit medium on the island of Bali, Indonesia. Clients consult her about problems ranging from physical and mental illness to theft and advice on ritual matters. This book is a fascinating case-study of healing in a Southeast Asian society, and is unique because the book is integrated with film of specific patient treatments, as well as of Jero's own reflections on her life and work. Healer Jero, anthropologist Linda Connor, and ethnographic film-makers Timothy Asch and Patsy Asch collaborated in the study and in the production of the book and films, and for the first time a major academic press has produced a video-cassette of films to accompany the book. The result is an unrivalled resource for people interested in alternative medical systems, and is an important and innovative contribution to ethnographic methodology.

Stuart-Fox lived in Bali through the 1970s and 1980s, becoming fluent in the local language. He had a close personal friendship with Mangku Liyer that began in the early 1970s when the home of the balian (folk healer) in Pengosekan was in a quiet village untouched by asphalted roads or electricity and separated from the main town of Ubud by beautiful rice fields. Starting in the mid-1970s, Fox began recording conversations with Liyer, and much of the story in the typescript (and the later book) is told in Liyer’s own words. Stuart-Fox's aim was to explain the significance of the magic drawings within the traditional practice of a Balinese healer and of Liyer in particular. The interviews were recorded well before the world knew anything about Mangku Liyer (later made famous by Stuart-Fox' published book, Pray, Magic, Heal (2015) and the Hollywood movie (Eat, pray, love) loosely based on it) or anything about traditional Balinese healing arts. -- Summary based in part on the Bali Advertiser's review of the 2015 publication: https://www.baliadvertiser.biz/pray-magic-heal-story-ketut-liyer-david-stuart-fox/
