The literary work of Leonid Andreyev is populated with unfortunate characters who inspire compassion. Andreiev never managed to get rid of the traumatizing experiences of his past, and transmitted in his texts images of tragedy and bitterness through his vanquished characters, with a revolted, impetuous and torturously personal style. In general, Andreyev's works reflect the somber and haunted life of those who have already lost all hope and illusion. Even the mood with which he tries to impregnate some texts tends to sound ironic and somber. Andreiev always tries to draw the reader's attention to the most tragic and cruel side of life, whipping up human selfishness, impiety, cowardice and brutality.Placed among the great pessimistic writers, Andreiev descends to the heart of the miseries that surround him, not hesitating even before the morbid, and exposing everything with an almost savage rawness.Critic August Nemo selected seven short stories from this author for your entertainment:LazarusOn The Day of CrucifixionThe Crushed FlowerThe Serpent's StoryJUdas IscariotThe Little AngelA Story Wich Will Never Be Finished

A remarkable collection of short expressionist stories by Russian playwright, novelist, and short-story writer, Leonid Nikolaievich Andreyev, who was considered to be the father of Expressionism in Russian literature. Traces of compassion, beauty, and sympathetic insight are encountered on every page side by side with barbarity and crudeness, the reason being that Andreyev portrays life without hiding, without neglecting any part of it. The Little Angel, and other stories (1916) was of one of his collections that were extensively translated into book form. The plots in these stories are straightforward, the characters are isolated, and the endings are harsh and profound in their sadness. Because of the cumulative descriptions of the strange and the dreadful, Andreyev has been called the Russian Edgar Allan Poe. During the 1914-1929 period, America was eager for anything similar to Edgar Allan Poe. As Poe's Russian equivalent, translations of Andreyev's work found a ready audience in the English-speaking world. This collection contains the following short stories: The Little Angel At the Roadside Station Snapper The Lie An Original Petka at the Bungalow Silence Laughter The Friend In the Basement The City The Marseillaise The Tocsin Bargamot and Garaska Stepping-stones The Spy

Conceive the joy of a lover of nature who, leaving the art galleries, wanders out among the trees and wild flowers and birds that the pictures of the galleries have sentimentalised. It is some such joy that the man who truly loves the noblest in letters feels when tasting for the first time the simple delights of Russian literature. French and English and German authors, too, occasionally, offer works of lofty, simple naturalness; but the very keynote to the whole of Russian literature is simplicity, naturalness, veraciousness. Critic August Nemo selected seven short stories from authors who bring all the richness and quality of Russian literature: - The Nose by Nikolai Gogol - The Queen of Spades by Alexander Pushkin - God Sees The Truth, But Waits by Leo Tolstoy - The Bet by Anton Chekhov - The Christmas Tree And The Wedding by Fyodor Dostoyevsky - One Autumun Night by Maxim Gorky - Lazarus by Leonid Andreyev For more books with interesting themes, be sure to check the other books in this collection!

Best Russian Short Stories by Leonid AndreyevLeonid Nikolaievich Andreyev was a Russian playwright, novelist and short-story writer. He is one of the most talented and prolific representatives of the Silver Age period in Russian history. Andreyev's style combines elements of realist, naturalist and symbolist schools in literature. Andreyev's first collection of short stories and short novels appeared in 1901, quickly selling a quarter-million copies and making him a literary star in Russia. In 1901 he published "?????" ("The Wall"), 1902, he published "? ??????" ("In the Fog") and "??????" ("The Abyss,") which was a response to "The Kreutzer Sonata" by Leo Tolstoy. These last two stories caused great commotion because of their candid and audacious treatment of sex. In the years between 1898 and 1905 Andreyev published numerous short stories on many subjects, including life in Russian provincial settings, court and prison incidents (where he drew on material from his professional life), and medical settings. His particular interest in psychology and psychiatry gave him an opportunity to explore insights into the human psyche and to depict memorable personalities who later became classic characters of Russian literature ("Thought" 1902).We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection.
