These 500 sample questions have the same format and style as the questions on the current Multistate Professional Responsibility Exam (MPRE). The multiple-choice format also provides a useful way to test students' knowledge of each provision or clause in each of the American Bar Association's Model Rules of Professional Conduct, as well as the ABA official Comments (which the MPRE tests along with the Model Rules themselves). Questions also cover recent ABA Formal Ethics Opinions and sections of the Restatement (Third) of the Law Governing Lawyers that are most relevant for upcoming MPRE exams. No other MPRE practice book currently on the market has as many sample questions, or as broad coverage, as this book. The practice questions are also extremely useful in mastering the material covered in every Professional Responsibility/Legal Ethics course, which is a required course at every American law school. The arrangement of topics in this book follows the order of how heavily the MPRE tests each Rule. An Index helps students find the sections devoted to individual Model Rules in case their Professional Responsibility course arranges topics in a different order. NOTE: THIS BOOK DOES NOT CONTAIN EXPLANATIONS. Most questions have a citation or reference immediately beneath the question to the specific Model Rule provision, Comment, Restatement section, or case that will explain the question and the correct answer. Professor Stevenson's YouTube channel has corresponding video lectures about each rule. Customers wanting a book with complete explanations for every question should get the author's Glannon Guide for Professional Responsibility.

Examines the impact of medical and psychological illness on foreign policy decision making. Illness provides specific, predictable, and recognizable shifts in attention, time perspective, cognitive capacity, judgment, and emotion, which systematically affect impaired leaders. In particular, this book discusses the ways in which processes related to aging, physical and psychological illness, and addiction influence decision making. This book provides detailed analysis of four cases among the American presidency. Woodrow Wilson's October 1919 stroke affected his behavior during the Senate fight over ratifying the League of Nations. Franklin Roosevelt's severe coronary disease influenced his decisions concerning the conduct of war in the Pacific from 1943–1945 in particular. John Kennedy's illnesses and treatments altered his behavior at the 1961 Vienna conference with Soviet Premier Khrushchev. And Nixon's psychological impairments biased his decisions regarding the covert bombing of Cambodia in 1969–1970.

Modern culture tends to separate medicine and miracles, but their histories are closely intertwined. The Roman Catholic Church recognizes saints through canonization based on evidence that they worked miracles, as signs of their proximity to God. Physicianhistorian Jacalyn Duffin has examined Vatican sources on 1400 miracles from six continents and spanning four centuries. Overwhelmingly the miracles cited in canonizations between 1588 and 1999 are healings, and the majority entail medical care and physician testimony. These remarkable records contain intimate stories of illness, prayer, and treatment, as told by people who rarely leave traces: peasants and illiterates, men and women, old and young. A woman's breast tumor melts away; a man's wounds knit; a lame girl suddenly walks; a dead baby revives. Suspicious of wishful thinking or na ve enthusiasm, skeptical clergy shaped the inquiries to identify recoveries that remain unexplained by the best doctors of the era. The tales of healing are supplemented with substantial testimony from these physicians. Some elements of the miracles change through time. Duffin shows that doctors increase in number; new technologies are embraced quickly; diagnoses shift with altered capabilities. But other aspects of the miracles are stable. The narratives follow a dramatic structure, shaped by the formal questions asked of each witness and by perennial reactions to illness and healing. In this history, medicine and religion emerge as parallel endeavors aimed at deriving meaningful signs from particular instances of human distress -- signs to explain, alleviate, and console in confrontation with suffering and mortality. A lively, sweeping analysis of a fascinating set of records, this book also poses an exciting methodological challenge to historians: miracle stories are a vital source not only on the thoughts and feelings of ordinary people, but also on medical science and its practitioners.

The follow up to Lazarewicz's harrowing Żeby Nie Bylo Śladów (Leave No Trace) depicting the case of the political murder of Grzegorz Przemyk--which earned Lazarewicz the Nike Literary Award in 2017--Did This Hand Kill? focuses on the case of Rita Gorgonowa, a cause célèbre of the interwar period in Poland. Gorgonowa, a governess having an affair with her employer, was accused of brutally murdering his daughter, the 17-year-old Lusia on New Year's Eve in 1931. Despite her claims of innocence, Gorgonowa was declared Poland's ultimate villain, and eventually convicted. But questions remain about this case--the most notorious murder trial of the Second Polish Republic--along with questions about what exactly happened to Gorgonowa post-World War II. Lazarewicz revisits the crime with a contemporary lens and recreates the furor and celebrity revolving around this murder.
