3C seismic applications provide enhanced rock property characterization of the reservoir that can complement P-wave methods. The vertical seismic profile, acquired with an array of 3C receivers and either a single source or several arranged in a multi-component configuration, provides an ideal high fidelity calibration tool for seismic projects involved in the application of seismic anisotropy. This book catalogues the majority of specialized tools necessary to work with P-P, P-S and S-S data from such VSP surveys at the acquisition design, processing and interpretation stages. In particular, it discusses 3C, 4C, 6C and 9C VSP, marine and land surveys with near and multiple offsets (walkways), azimuths (walkarounds) or a combination of both. These are considered for TIH or TIV flavours of seismic anisotropy arising from cracks, fractures, sedimentary layering, and shales. The anisotropic adaptation of familiar seismic methods for velocity analysis and inversion, reflected amplitude interpretation, are given together with more multi-component specific algorithms based upon the principles dictated by the vector convolutional model. This study investigates the 3C-3D surface and downhole (VSP) seismic datasets previously collected at the Athabasca Basin McArthur River to Millennium uranium mine sites using a number of unconventional analytical methods. The objective is to understand the potential of the seismic method to delineate subsurface features such as the hydrothermal alteration footprint, the sandstone-basement unconformity and the subvertical thrust fault zone. Methodologies applied include a series of forward and data-driven approaches. First, this study accomplishes the prediction of the compressional and shear wave amplitude and traveltime using angle dependent reflectivity equations and 2D elastic finite-difference waveform models. The numerical predictions are based on the existing and estimated petrophysical data from the local area. Second, this study discovers a number of unique properties of the seismic wave attenuation from surface and downhole seismic datasets. Multiple methods applied to VSP datasets confirm that the attenuation quality factor (Q) in the study area is low and variable. Finally, this study analyzes the traveltime and waveform data collected from the unique 3C-3D-borehole seismic geometry at Millennium to delineate the subsurface geologic structures that are potentially related to the wave attenuation and velocity. A forward 3D visco-elastic waveform model is created to illustrate the observed abnormal amplitude and velocity azimuthal variations with a superimposed effect of intrinsic and scattering. The results from these series of approaches provide updated understandings of the alterations, structural geology, and their relationships with seismic data. These understandings contribute to the suggestions for future seismic imaging work such as converted shear wave processing, downhole seismic acquisition, and alteration footprint tomography.

Conventional Kirchoff migration can be made much faster by a priori calculation of ray incident directions, so rays are traced back only along the measured directions rather than in all possible directions. This implementation is known as parsimonious Kirchoff migration. For surface seismic data, the ray incident direction is measured by calculating the horizontal slowness components (or ray parameters) in the inline and crossline directions. However, this implementation does not work for vertical seismic profile (VSP) data, which has only a single vertical line of receivers, so the horizontal slownesses cannot be measured. We overcome this limitation for calculating incident directions from three-component VSP data by polarization analysis of the incident waves. Dip and azimuth angles of the waves are calculated at the receivers by estimating the data covariance matrix within a time window. For P-waves, the data covariance matrix defines the polarization ellipsoid which is then used to calculate the incident angles; for S-waves, an additional step is required because the polarization is orthogonal to the incident direction. For migration we perform ray tracing only along the measured incident directions, which eliminates the traveltime table calculation and reduces the total number of rays being traced. This enhances the efficiency of Kirchhoff migration of three-component VSP data.
