The present volume is based on the proceedings of the Advanced Study Institute (ASI) sponsored by the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). The Institute was conducted at the beautiful Chateau de Bonas, near Toulouse, France in October, 1991. A number of scholars from different countries participated in the two-week institute on differential diagnosis and treatments of reading and writing problems. The accepted papers for this volume are divided into three sections: (a) Differential diagnosis of reading disabilities; (b) Access to language-related component processes; and (c) Reading/spelling strategies. The other papers appear in a companion volume: Developmental and Acquired Dyslexia: Neuropsychological and Neurolinguistic Perspectives, also coedited by Joshi and Leong and published by Kluwer Academic Publishers. Several people and organizations have helped us in this endeavor and their assistance is gratefully acknowledged. Our special thanks are due to: the Scientific Affairs Division of NATO for providing the major portion of the financial support; Dr. L. V. da Cunha of NATO and Dr. THo Kester and Mrs. Barbara Kester of the International Transfer of Science and Technology (ITST) for their help and support of the various aspects of the institute; Mr. Charles Stockman and the entire staff of the Chateau de Bonas for making our stay a pleasant one by helping us to run the Institute smoothly. We also wish to thank our reviewers and the following people for other assistance: Christi Martin, and Xi-wu Fang.

Completely revised edition of a global resource first published in 1978 and previously revised in 1989. Sixty-three contributions are arranged in sections on the pathophysiology of the uremic syndrome--principles and biophysics of dialysis; technology of dialysis and associated methods; quantification and prescription; complications; pharmacological considerations; special clinical situations; organ system and metabolic complications; and organization and results of chronic dialysis. The aim is to give understanding of the complexities of modern dialysis apparatus so that practitioners can make the best use of the technology--and so that fledgling nephrologists can avoid the temptation to by-pass the theory and the nuances. A pragmatic social cognitive psychology covers a lot of territory, mostly in personality and social psychology but also in clinical, counseling, and school psychologies. It spans a topic construed as an experimental study of mechanisms by its natural science wing and as a study of cultural interactions by its social science wing. To learn about it, one should visit laboratories, field study settings, and clinics, and one should read widely. If one adds the fourth dimen sion, time, one should visit the archives too. To survey such a diverse field, it is common to offer an edited book with a resulting loss in integration. This book is coauthored by a social personality psychologist with historical interests (DFB: Parts I, II, and IV) in collaboration with two social clinical psychologists (CRS and JEM: Parts III and V). We frequently cross-reference between chapters to aid integration without duplication. To achieve the kind of diversity our subject matter represents, we build each chapter anew to reflect the emphasis of its content area. Some chapters are more historical, some more theoretical, some more empirical, and some more applied. All the chapters reflect the following positions.

Our environment has been greatly damaged due to pollution and over exploitation of natural resources by human beings. All the natural ecosystems have been damaged to a great extent. Restoration of these damages is becoming a priority and of environmental interest. Science and technology of restoration ecology is rapidly evolving. Restoration requires a holistic approach. Restoration technology is now available to redirect the damaged ecosystems to their near natural integrity. In this context, this book is the first of its kind in reviewing the different approaches undertaken to restore various damaged ecosystems. Scientists currently working in this field have contributed their work in the form of reviews, site-specific case studies, technology for bioremediation and biodegradation. The book will provide first hand information in this currently expanding field and will be helpful to biologists, environmental scientists, engineers, wastewater treatment experts, microbiologists and all those interested in the conservation and management of the environment.
