1978 National Camping Market Survey PDF Download

This survey was conducted in 1973 to determine the nature of the national market that existed for campers and camping equipment. Two files contain data gathered from 2,207 respondents measuring past, present, and projected habits and attitudes regarding family camping, vacation travel, leisure activities, and related equipment purchases. Part 1 contains variables similar to those used in an earlier study (NATIONAL CAMPING MARKET SURVEY, 1971 [ICPSR 7798]), e.g., use of seven specific types of camping equipment : tent, camping trailer, travel trailer, truck camper, pick-up cover, motor home, and converted van. Other similar variables include type and date of outdoor recreation equipment purchases (e.g., boats and recreational land vehicles, as well as sporting, hunting, fishing, scuba, and aircraft equipment). This file also contains data measuring respondents' interest in purchasing 16 other types of recreational equipment : fishing gear, snowmobiles, canoes, skiing gear, motor boats, hunting gear, trail bikes, and a variety of camping gear. Other data include willingness to attend camping shows, perceived cost involved in camping, proposed camping fee structures for public lands, and the impact of the gas shortage on camping habits. Part 2 contains background information about the respondents, e.g., region and state of residence, size of city, occupation, level of education, rented or owned home, sex, race, occupation, income, relationship to head of household, and education level of head of household.
