Excerpt from Forty Days in 1914 This little book owes its origin to curiosity. I wanted to see if it was possible to discover what the Germans were planning and doing during the retreat from Mons. I found that by piecing together evidence obtainable from the accounts of the early parts of the war published in Germany, in neutral countries, in France, and by Belgian authorities, as well as from the reports of the very full investigations which have been conducted into the German atrocities, in Northern France and in Belgium, it was possible to work out the movements of the German armies, and from these to deduce the German plans. The information obtained in this way threw what has been to me an entirely new light upon the campaign, and made clear what had previously been dark. Much of what I have written about the Germans is necessarily conjectural, and therefore I make no claim to be writing history. Excerpt from July and August of 1914 It is many months after our return from Europe that we decide to print this book. The diary, for such it is, was merely putting down day by day our impressions of places and events and seems of very small importance for printing. The summer of the great war, however, was an epoch making period. We were witnesses near at hand of its ou coming and it is our desire to leave for our children and a few dear friends the picture of those months as they appeared to us. It should be remembered that references to the war are as they were made at the time, merely jottings from news paper accounts as they came to us then. Mistakes in dates are largely due to the strict censorship, which allowed news of many happenings to come through only after long inter vals from the actual occurrence. In the hurry of newspaper make-up many names were undoubtedly misspelled. We took them down as they were, dates and names, and as they were we let them stand here. Excerpt from Letters Written From England: August 4 to November 4, 1914 Arthur Crosby Ludington was the son of Charles Henry and Josephine Noyes Ludington and was born in New York City on March 6th, 1880. His preparation for college was received at the Black Hall (Connecticut) School, and at St. Paul's School, Concord, New Hampshire. After graduating with honors from Yale University, he was connected for nearly three years with a banking firm in New York City, and then went to Princeton as instructor in Political Science and assistant to President Woodrow Wilson. In the summer of 1907 he went to Germany and studied at Heidelberg University, and later took courses at Columbia. At this time he identified himself with political reform work in New York and gave especial attention to the betterment of election laws, helping to frame the direct nominations and Massachusetts ballot bills which are now laws of New York State. He served for several years as a member of the Legislative Committee of the Citizens' Union of New York City and was active in the National Short Ballot Association. Among other things, he made a compilation of the variations in the forms of the ballot, from the days of the "vest pocket" variety to the present Australian and composite forms. Before his last trip abroad, he was attached for a time to the Department of the Interior at Washington, writing a report on the Indian policy of the United States Government.
