Chronic pain costs the nation up to $635 billion each year in medical treatment and lost productivity. The 2010 Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act required the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to enlist the Institute of Medicine (IOM) in examining pain as a public health problem. In this report, the IOM offers a blueprint for action in transforming prevention, care, education, and research, with the goal of providing relief for people with pain in America. To reach the vast multitude of people with various types of pain, the nation must adopt a population-level prevention and management strategy. The IOM recommends that HHS develop a comprehensive plan with specific goals, actions, and timeframes. Better data are needed to help shape efforts, especially on the groups of people currently underdiagnosed and undertreated, and the IOM encourages federal and state agencies and private organizations to accelerate the collection of data on pain incidence, prevalence, and treatments. Because pain varies from patient to patient, healthcare providers should increasingly aim at tailoring pain care to each person's experience, and self-management of pain should be promoted. In addition, because there are major gaps in knowledge about pain across health care and society alike, the IOM recommends that federal agencies and other stakeholders redesign education programs to bridge these gaps. Pain is a major driver for visits to physicians, a major reason for taking medications, a major cause of disability, and a key factor in quality of life and productivity. Given the burden of pain in human lives, dollars, and social consequences, relieving pain should be a national priority.

A lighthearted introspective view of one man's journey with chronic pain and illness. Ryan was a normal guy in his early 20s, who loved to play and watch sports, workout, hang out with friends, and was on the cusp of finishing his criminal justice degree and launching his career into the field. However, all this changed when symptoms started to appear out of nowhere, eventually becoming more and more debilitating over time. Ryan was left a shell of his former self, struggling to even make it through the simplest of everyday tasks, all the while appearing normal on the outside to everyone else. Ryan details the struggle of being taken seriously, and the journey he went through to find answers, as well as relief. Broken into 4 sections, Ryan first breaks down his journey to the present day, acknowledging certain practitioners who helped him, and what it is they do. Ryan recounts the many specialists over the years, the many diagnosis and misdiagnosis, and everything that he went through, culminating in a recent diagnosis that may finally be the answer to a lot of his symptoms. In the second section, Ryan admits that he was not prepared to deal with chronic pain and illness mentally, and how this affected him overtime. Ryan learned that he had to take his mental health more seriously if he was going to not just survive, but thrive, given his circumstances. Ryan details the many mental strategies and coping mechanisms that he learned and used to help him. In an eye opening third section, Ryan got those closest to him, to write about their experiences in loving someone with chronic issues, and just what it is that they went through with him on his journey. We rarely hear about how chronic illness affects those closest to the sufferer, but we learn in painstaking detail, how they suffered along with him. Ryan ends the book with a question and answer segment, tying up loose ends, answering questions people have asked him over the years in great detail. All in all it is an inspiring look into a world few of us will ever know, let alone understand. With a great sense of humor throughout, Ryan is able to capture what this is like, and bring awareness to the struggle that many of those with chronic illness go through.
