The art of female impersonation is a phenomenon in the GLBTQI community. Adorned with beautiful photos, the legendary entertainers talk about a culture still fighting for equal rights. They remind us when being gay was less appealing; a time when it was illegal to be seen in drag, when permits and licenses were required, and as an act of discouragement, the legal system played its part in allowing those in authority to use illegal tactics in their efforts to disband gay establishments by way of illegal arrests, scare tactics, gay bashing, and other dehumanizing acts such as strip searches on the sidewalks outside of the gay clubs. The entertainers give all of themselves as they tell their stories of accomplishments, defeat, love, hate, family turmoil, long and loving relationships, out of control lives, maturity, alcohol and drug use, rape, prostitution, death of loved ones, manslaughter, life changing events, alienation from parents and siblings, fear, and much more. www.100mige.com

100 of the Most Influential Gay Entertainers is a creative nonfiction book featuring the Nation's most influential entertainers in the GLBTQI (gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, queer, inter-sexed) communities across the United States. Read the true life stories of your favorite entertainers as they provide intimate details of their early childhood, the discovery of their individualism, their challenges and achievements, and their disappointments and accomplishments. Read the stories of injustice on every level of inhumanity imagined, beginning with a society whose lack of knowledge and understanding set out to discourage and disband a culture of people by putting into place dehumanizing rules and laws such as requiring entertainers to wear at least one piece of men's clothing under t heir drag attire or risk being arrested, laws requiring drag entertainers to purchase a license in order to perform, and the law against walking the street in drag attire; read about police trickery, abuse of power and physical abuse during raids at local entertainment venues and apartments shared by entertainers. Also read how an entire congregation of parishioners tried to force the hand of their pastor to throw h is own son out of the church, and the story of an entertainer whose family has disowned her for over twenty-five years because of her sexual preference. Most importantly, read how these entertainers have not only excelled in their crafts as female impersonators, male lead entertainers and female-to-male illusionists, but also as productive, educated citizens in mainstream society as celebrity look-alikes, successful business owners, accomplished singers and musicians, television personalities, professional choreographers, managers, models, and actors. Reformatted and re-edited with new and updated photos and other personal information that includes a brief autobiography of the author.

Translocas focuses on drag and transgender performance and activism in Puerto Rico and its diaspora. Arguing for its political potential, Lawrence La Fountain-Stokes explores the social and cultural disruptions caused by Latin American and Latinx “locas” (effeminate men, drag queens, transgender performers, and unruly women) and the various forms of violence to which queer individuals in Puerto Rico and the U.S. are subjected. This interdisciplinary, auto-ethnographic, queer-of-color performance studies book explores the lives and work of contemporary performers and activists including Sylvia Rivera, Nina Flowers, Freddie Mercado, Javier Cardona, Jorge Merced, Erika Lopez, Holly Woodlawn, Monica Beverly Hillz, Lady Catiria, and Barbra Herr; television programs such as RuPaul’s Drag Race; films such as Paris Is Burning, The Salt Mines, and Mala Mala; and literary works by authors such as Mayra Santos-Febres and Manuel Ramos Otero. Lawrence La Fountain-Stokes, a drag performer himself, demonstrates how each destabilizes (and sometimes reifies) dominant notions of gender and sexuality through drag and their embodied transgender expression. These performances provide a means to explore and critique issues of race, class, poverty, national identity, and migratory displacement while they posit a relationship between audiences and performers that has a ritual-like, communal dimension. The book also analyzes the murders of Jorge Steven López Mercado and Kevin Fret in Puerto Rico, and invites readers to challenge, question, and expand their knowledge about queer life, drag, trans performance, and Puerto Rican identity in the Caribbean and the diaspora. The author also pays careful attention to transgender experience, highlighting how trans activists and performers mold their bodies, promote social change, and create community in a context that oscillates between glamour and abjection.

This fascinating and thought-provoking read challenges readers to consider entertainers and entertainment in new ways, and highlights figures from outside the worlds of film, television, and music as influential "pop stars." Comprising approximately 100 entries from more than 50 contributors from a variety of fields, this book covers a wide historical swath of entertainment figures chosen primarily for their lasting influence on American popular culture, not their popularity. The result is a unique collection that spotlights a vastly different array of figures than would normally be included in a collection of this nature—and appeals to readers ranging from high school students to professionals researching specific entertainers. Each subject individual's influence on popular culture is analyzed from the context of his or her time to the present in a lively and engaging way and through a variety of intellectual approaches. Many entries examine commonly discussed figures' influence on popular culture in ways not normally seen—for example, the widespread appeal of Woody Allen's essay collections to other comedians; or the effect of cinematic adaptations of Tennessee Williams' plays in breaking down Hollywood censorship.
