Excerpt from Investigations on the Theory of the Photographic Process It must be understood that the following pages are in no sense a text-book or an authoritative pronouncement on the theory of negative making, but simply a collection of certain investigations carried out in the past four years. A preface is frequently an apology for what follows, and to some extent this is the case with our own. For the possibly objectionable wealth of experimental details and results, it must be pleaded that the work was first presented in theses for degrees, and could not be subsequently cut down without a most radical alteration. Also, comprehensive and minute details, though frequently taking too much space for their publication in the ordinary journals, are sometimes of value to other investigators, who may draw from them other, and more correct, conclusions than their originators. We hope, however, that the work is sufficiently comprehensive to be of value to those photographers interested in the bases of their hobby or profession, to the experimental investigator in photography, and to the scientific student of photographic chemistry. In our investigations we have always endeavoured to deal with questions quantitatively, feeling that only in this way can any advance of permanent value be made. Although we recognize the increasing importance of photographic processes based on materials other than silver halide, we do not consider it feasible to include a thorough treatment of nonsilver processes in a book of this size and still treat the silver halide photographic system with the thoroughness accorded it in the earlier editions. We accordingly confine the treatment in this book to the silver halide system, and acknowledge that the scope is not as comprehensive as the title might imply. - Preface to the third edition.
