Australia has an atypical retirement income system: it comprises a flat-rate, non-contributory, affluence-tested age pension, and a mandatory, defined contribution accumulation plan to which employers must contribute 9.25 percent (moving to 12 percent) of wages on behalf of their employees. We briefly compare the Australian and US economies and demographies, and then describe the Australian arrangements and assess its econ efficiency and efficacy in delivering retirement support. We focus especially on the means testing of the first pillar in Australia and the mandated membership of pre-funded private pension plans. We conclude by considering insights for the evolution of the US pension reform debate as demographic change unfolds.

Australian women experience higher rates of poverty than men in old age and are more reliant on the age pension. This paper reviews the factors that contribute to women's poor economic security upon retirement and offers a number of suggestions on how employers can improve women's economic security. Though Australia's retirement income policy is designed to assist workers save for their own retirement and reduce pressure on the pension, the existing system assumes a higher rate of continuous, full-time employment than the majority of women can achieve.

Women are more likely to face financial insecurity and poverty in retirement than men, as the current superannuation system favours higher income earners who work full time and continuously throughout their working lives. Through qualitative and quantitative research, this report provides insights into the lives behind this gendered superannuation poverty in Australia. It presents a statistical overview of women and work using data from the Household, Income and Labour Dynamics in Australia (HILDA) Study, the Australian Bureau of Statistics, and the Workplace Gender Equality Agency. The report then presents findings from interviews with 40 women, exploring the complex dynamics of women's lives that may result in inequity in superannuation accumulation and financial security in later life. The report concludes with recommendations for policy and superannuation and calls for a fairer retirement income system that adequately recognises and rewards women for the enormous but often indirect contribution they make to the Australian economy.

Women, particularly single women, are at greater risk of experiencing poverty, housing stress, and homelessness in retirement than men are. Though this problem is influenced by many factors, essentially it's due to the fact that women and men experience work very differently. This report presents the findings and recommendations of a government inquiry into economic security for women in retirement. The inquiry investigated the impact of inadequate superannuation savings on retirement outcomes; the extent, causes, and drivers of the gender retirement income gap; structural impediments in the superannuation system; the adequacy of the main sources of retirement income; and what measures would provide women with access to adequate and secure retirement incomes. The recommendations largely concern measures to help women increase their participation in the workforce and improve their superannuation savings.
