Diversity in the Church Matters to God The local Church is the hope of the world Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. said it best over 45 years ago: “We must face the sad fact that at 11 o’clock on Sunday morning, when we stand to sing… we stand in the most segregated hour in America.” What an unfortunate reality that many still face today. Have you ever been asked the question, “Is your church a white church or a black church?”…No, it’s God’s Church! Church Diversity discusses topics such as: How we can begin to implement change today What key insights, strategies and practical tips can help Who are the leading voices in diversity and what can they teach the Church This resource is a tool to foster the tough conversations and encourage decision-making to change the face and heart of the Church. There is already a community out there passionate about this topic and moving the Church forward. Hundreds of them uploaded their photos and can be seen throughout the pages of this book. Their twitter names are also included so you can begin connecting with them today! WE ARE CHURCH DIVERSITY “Whatever racial woes we face in America, they cannot be dealt with by politicians or Washington D.C., but rather by the local church…help our nation navigate through this critical and much needed conversation on race.” - J.C. Watts, Jr., Former Member of Congress “…Scott Williams is ever seeking to see this gift opened and embraced. His book, like his life and ministry, is an invitation to the most rewarding of all human journeys.” - Jim Hanon, Writer/Director End of the Spear

Robert Williams Irish Street Preacher and Methodist Circuit Rider Lay Preacher in Ireland and Circuit Rider in America First Methodist to preach in Virginia and North Carolina First Methodist Printer and Publisher in America Founder of the Norfolk and Petersburg Societies 1772 Founder of the Brunswick Circuit 1773-1774 Founder or Jerusalem United Methodist Church 1773 In 1772 news spread along the south side of the Roanoke River that a Methodist circuit rider was going to preach under the big willow oak on Ebenezer Coleman's plantation. Robert Williams preached with power. The oak tree became a regular preaching place on his Brunswick Circuit and the place where Jerusalem United Methodist Church was born. Robert William's birth, baptism, and conversion are not documented. Neither is his call to preach. His travel journals, if there were any kept, have never been found. Dr. Bergland, researching his life and legends, employs church records, colonial history and imagination to tell the story (history) and stories (historical fiction) of an indefatigable (stubborn) Irish lay preacher. Dr. John K Bergland is a retired United Methodist Minister who was the professor of preaching and associate dean at Duke Divinity School. His interest in Methodist history (he authored "Strangely Warm") and convictional preaching are reflected in this book. When he came to Jerusalem UMC as an interim pastor in 2005 he learned about Robert Williams great awakening ministry in the Roanoke Valley. He bought a home on the shores of Lake Gaston (formerly the Roanoke River) and, by the pretty ways of providence, found himself living on the old ferry road used by the circuit rider on his way to the Jerusalem Methodist class in 1773. The Stories of Robert Williams are now heard wherever Dr. Bergland happens to be.

In Beyond the Possible, Reverend Cecil Williams, one of the most well-known and provocative ministers in the United States, reflects on his fifty years creating radical social change as the head of San Francisco's Memorial Glide Church. Williams' innovations, such as HIV testing during services, have drawn protest from more conservative factions within the Methodist Church, but his work in the community has drawn praise from the likes of Bill Clinton, Oprah Winfrey, and Warren Buffett. Written with Glide Church founding pastor Janice Mirikitani, and with a foreword by Dave Eggers, Beyond the Possible is a book of wisdom, providing lessons that Reverend Williams has learned so that readers can learn to embrace their true selves, accept all those around them, and fully live day to day through social change as worship.
