An early Christian construct which had the recently-deceased soul endures a series of judicial proceedings by demons, the telõnia has survived as a folk belief in Orthodox nations such as Russia and Ukraine. The telõnia construct is a controversial one in Orthodoxy, however, as discussions of the construct's origins often break down into polemical debate regarding the ontological reality of the telõnia. This thesis, as its primary goal, investigates the origins and early development of the telõnia in a methodical, scholarly manner. It adduces texts from ancient Egypt to propose that the origins of the telõnia extend to the earliest written phases of the Egyptian religion. Secondarily, this thesis investigates the origins of the logismoi: intentions which demons introduce into human minds to seduce them to sin. In 1952, Morton Bloomfield posited that the logismoi ultimately evolved from the telonia. Bloomfield's assertion has become the secondary inquiry of this thesis: to wit, whether the logismoi construct evolved from the telõnia. This study employs textual criticism of sources in Greek, Latin, and Coptic to answer the two queries. The evidence indicates that the telonia evolved from three previous constructs over the course of at least 2500 years. It also indicates that neither the telõnia nor any of its ancestral constructs influenced the creation of the logismoi.

Frannie Cavanaugh is a good Catholic girl with a bit of a wicked streak. She has spent years keeping everyone at a distance---even her closest friends---and it seems as if her senior year is going to be more of the same . . . until Luc Cain enrolls in her class. No one knows where he came from, but Frannie can't seem to stay away from him. What she doesn't know is that Luc is on a mission. He's been sent from Hell itself to claim Frannie's soul. It should be easy---all he has to do is get her to sin, and Luc is as tempting as they come. Frannie doesn't stand a chance. But he has to work fast, because if the infernals are after her, the celestials can't be far behind. And sure enough, it's not long before the angel Gabriel shows up, willing to do anything to keep Luc from getting what he came for. It isn't long before they find themselves fighting for more than just Frannie's soul. But if Luc fails, there will be Hell to pay . . . for all of them. All signs point to the lost prophecy and his desire for her inherent power as a Vessel of Light. While Jude Delacroix spends his days and nights searching for the prophecy, another protector steps in to take his place. Thomas, a guardian angel, claims Genevieve is his to protect if the demon hunter does not. As threats against her life escalate, he offers her the power to sift. This Goncourt Lyceens Award–winning novel is “a powerfully visualized magic-realist fable” of secrets, faith, and female defiance in twelfth century France (Kirkus Reviews). France, 1187. On the day of her wedding, the beautiful fifteen-year-old Esclarmonde scandalizes the court when she refuses to marry the knight chosen by her father, the brutish lord of the domain of Whispers. Defying her father’s wishes, she vows to give herself to God. To punish her willfulness, her father imprisons her in a cell adjoining the castle’s chapel. Instead of the peaceful solitude she sought, Esclarmonde finds in her cell the crossroads between the living and the dead. Walled in, with nothing but a single barred window connecting her to the outside world, Esclarmonde exerts a mysterious power over the kingdom. The virgin sorceress reaches a saint-like status, and men and women journey from far and wide to hear her speak. When even her own father falls under her sway, Esclarmonde persuades him to undertake an ill-fated war in the Holy Land.

The Sor-Wiz and the Painted Lady: Book Three of Whisper By: Johnathan Phillip Blackwell When you think you have it all, think again. Today you are here, but where is here? Between fantasy and fiction lies the reality of the mind and the truth of us all. All is an illusion and in constant change, manifested to serve a purpose of intent. Be of thyself that the perception of others knows not an illusion. Magic, the effect of an intentional cause. What does time have to do with anything? Only that it changed every part of my life and because of that, I totally lost track of a lot of it. For some of it I didn't know where I had been, who I was, or what had happened during that time. Some of it I didn't want to remember! The answers I often got were as horrific and confusing as the questions I asked. After that, I had to put some space between me and people, and discovered I wanted more than my freedom. So I began to travel, on foot! You learn about the town you live in if you stay in one place long enough. You learn a lot about the hearts and hate of people this way. Who they really are, other than the illusions they manifest before you! You learn about animals; their ways of living and their regards too and of you. You learn quickly to pay attention to nature's sounds, smells, and how things feel. The power of wind and water. But the toughest part to deal with is what you find out about yourself! My name is Stethan Barton Scythe. With a last name like that, you make a lot of people more than a little nervous, and my father did!
