Download Water, Sanitation & Hygiene for Accelerating and Sustaining Progress on Neglected Tropical Diseases Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
"Neglected tropical diseases affect over 1 billion people, causing chronic disability and death, primarily among the poorest of the world--the same people who often lack access to even the most basic water and sanitation services. Provision of safe water, sanitation and hygiene is critical for the prevention and care for many NTDs, but has often received little attention in NTD control programmes. The release of the WHO NTD roadmap has given renewed impetus for collaboration between WASH and NTD actors. International organisations, academics, donors, practitioners, and countries have started mobilising efforts to work together. It is time to build on the momentum in the health and development community to reinforce joint WASH and NTD actions to accelerate progress towards control, elimination and eradication of NTDs. The principle of leaving no one behind is central to the Sustainable Development Goals' agenda, including for sanitation and water. WASH providers must prioritize reduction of inequalities to align with this agenda. This means prioritising service delivery to poor communities who suffer from or are at risk of NTDs. With just five years remaining to meet the roadmap targets, the need for action is urgent. While acknowledging successes in the fight against NTDs, we must also recognize the changing global health context, characterized by increased fragility and conflict, inequality, and vulnerability to a changing environment affected by climate change and natural disasters. All these factors mean that we must ensure that the successes achieved are sustained. We urgently need a renewed commitment to collaboration that reaches the most vulnerable--those most affected by NTDs, and those without access to basic water and sanitation services and good quality affordable healthcare. This strategy builds on existing progress to tackle NTDs, such as the billions of anti-parasitic treatments delivered since 2006, and continued efforts to treat and care for those suffering the chronic effects of these diseases. The joint five-year agenda presented here calls for more effective delivery of WASH alongside other NTD interventions and paves the way for sustainable development and shared prosperity."--Foreword

Download Preventing Diarrhoea Through Better Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
In early 2013, WHO convened an expert group of scientists from 14 collaborating research institutions to update the assessment of the burden of diarrhoeal disease from inadequate water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) and to reassess the effectiveness of WASH interventions. This group considered evolving and alternative methods for assessing the burden of disease and agreed on a rigorous new approach using meta-regression. In deriving the new figures, the experts incorporated the latest data on use of improved water and sanitation with minor adjustments, and drew upon the results from two new global reviews on microbial water quality and of handwashing practices specially prepared as part of this effort. This document outlines the latest research on the burden of diarrhoea related to inadequate water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH). It is based on a series of articles published in the scientific literature. In bringing together current evidence on exposure to unsafe drinking-water, inadequate sanitation and hygiene, alongside the most up-to-date analysis on the health impacts of interventions, this document contributes to informed policymaking and targeting of resources. It underscores how further progress can be achieved in this unfinished global water and sanitation and health agenda.

This report summarizes the World Health Organization’s (WHO) global work on water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) during 2022. It describes WHO’s continued delivery of essential WASH programming as elaborated in its 2018–2025 strategy. This includes publication and dissemination of its work monitoring access to WASH and WASH systems through the WHO/UNICEF Joint Monitoring Programme for Water Supply, Sanitation and Hygiene (JMP) and the UN-Water Global Analysis and Assessment of Sanitation and Drinking-Water (GLAAS), continued development and implementation of its norms on drinking-water and sanitation, and overall advocacy including on hand hygiene. All of WHO’s WASH work was augmented through the strength of its partnerships.

Download One Health Joint Plan of Action, 2022–2026 Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
Following the 27th Tripartite Annual Executive Meeting, the FAO Programme Committee in its 130th session, March 2021, requested the joint development, by the Tripartite (FAO/WHO/WOAH) and others, of a strategy and action plan to prevent future zoonotic pandemics through the One Health approach. The One Health Joint Plan of Action (OH JPA) is intended to guide the four organizations of the Quadripartite to work together on One Health with the aim of supporting their Members to build One Health capacities. It provides a framework for action and proposes a set of activities that the four organizations can offer together to enable countries to advance and scale up One Health in managing human, animal, plant and environment health threats. The framework uses a One Health approach to strengthen collaboration, communication, advocacy, and coordination equally across all sectors responsible for addressing health concerns at the human-animal-plant-environment interface.

Download Compendium of WHO and other UN guidance in health and environment, 2024 update Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
This is the 2024 update of the Compendium of WHO and other UN guidance on health and environment. The Compendium is a comprehensive collection of available WHO and other UN guidance for improving health by creating healthier environments. It provides an overview and easy access of more than 500 actions, and a framework for thinking about health and environment interventions. It covers a broad range of areas such as air pollution, water, sanitation and hygiene, climate change, chemicals, radiation, or food systems. Guidance is classified according to principal sectors involved, level of implementation (national, community, health care), the type of instrument (taxes, infrastructure etc.) and the category of evidence. The Compendium compiles existing guidance from hundreds of documents in a simple and systematized format. To ensure the most up-to-date information is provided to the end users, the Compendium is updated on a regular basis and incorporates the latest major WHO or other UN guidance on health and environment. The target audience includes any decision-makers with relevance to health and environment, and those assisting them (such as mayors, staff in ministries, UN country staff etc.). The Compendium has been prepared by WHO in cooperation with UN Environment, UNDP and UNICEF.
