It's time to play let's pretend--and walk like the animals! Show how well you can mimic our friends in the wild, five different creatures are hiding behind the flaps, all surrounded by their natural environments. Who is waddling by the pond? Golden-yellow ducks are passing by a blue pond, ringed by lime-green frogs, a flowery garland, and a tropical sky. Who is nibbling at the leaves--well, only a giraffe that tall! Streeeeeetch that neck as far as you can. And right near the koalas, bouncing up and down, is a kangaroo with a little baby tucked tightly in her pouch. Hens peck in the yard, near smaller fuzzy chicks, and in the branches, not too far from a butterfly, a slithering snake unfolds and wraps itself around them. Children will have tons of fun twisting and stretching and bending their bodies--while they learn animal facts and names and enjoy reading! 10 pages (all in color), 7 3/8 x 7 3/8.

"Story hour alert! Here’s a book with a clever premise, a bouncy text, and sunny, funny pictures. . . . Supremely satisfying." — Booklist (starred review) Mama Duck has a good hunch that the big brown creature waddling behind her babies is no duck! As the foxy impostor sneaks closer and closer to Mama Duck’s trailing brood, little ones will delight in shouting out his identity. Infectious rhythms and fresh, expressive watercolors liven up the pursuit, which ends when Mama Duck confronts the villain, beak to snout, and beats him at his own game.

The New York Times–bestselling illustrator of Budgie & Boo presents a cuddly raccoon in a tender tale of love and friendship. Waddles the raccoon loves to eat. In fact, he eats so much that his usual walk has turned into a waddle! He also loves to spend time with his best friend, Emily the duck. One day, Emily asks Waddles to sit on her unhatched eggs so she can go for a swim, and the very cuddly Waddles is happy to help. But he gets a big surprise when the ducklings begin to hatch! Waddles soon finds himself very attached to the new family of ducklings, so when it’s time for them to fly south for the winter, Waddles wonders if he will ever see his friends again . . . Tenderly crafted and illustrated, Waddles introduces readers to a delightful new character who learns that love and friendship are the only things that make someone truly “full.” Praise for Waddles “McPhail celebrates interspecies camaraderie in another picture book divided into four short chapters. . . . McPhail’s ink-and-watercolor illustrations elevate the familiar story of mismatched, devoted friends, coaxing expertly drawn emotion from his endearing characters. A tender, year-round reminder of the sustaining power of friendship.” —Booklist

No other nonhuman source has served as the basis for more metaphors than animals. Speaking of Animals is a dictionary of animal metaphors that are current in American English. It is comprehensive, historical, and metaphor-based. Each entry refers to the other dictionaries that catalog that same metaphor, and the dates of first appearance in writing are supplied, where possible, for both the metaphor and the name of the source. The main text is organized alphabetically by metaphor rather than by animal or animal behavior; all the metaphors are classified according to their animal source in a list at the end of the book. An animal metaphor is a word, phrase, or sentence that expresses a resemblance or similarity between someone or something and a particular animal or animal class. True metaphors are single words, such as the noun tiger, the verb hog, and the adjective chicken. Phrasal metaphors combine true metaphors with other words, such as blind tiger, hog the road, and chicken colonel. Other animal metaphors take the form of similes, such as like rats leaving a sinking ship and prickly as a hedgehog. Still others take the form of proverbs, such as Don't count your chickens before they hatch and Let sleeping dogs lie. The horse is the animal most frequently referred to in metaphors, followed closely by the dog. The Bible is the most prolific literary source of animal metaphors, followed closely by Shakespeare.
