Excerpt from A Manual of Land and Fresh Water Vertebrate Animals of the United States (Exclusive of Birds) The region covered by' this work is the whole of the United States between the Canadian and Mexican borders, neither Alaska nor the West Indian or Hawaiian Islands being included; the southern portion of Canada, however, is included, as it belongs to the same geographical region as the northern portion of the United States. With certain exceptions, all the species, as well as the geographic subspecies, of the four Classes of vertebrates above mentioned which are found in this large region, are described, the exceptions being those species which are of doubtful validity, those which are very rare, and certain Mexican species, chiefly of reptiles, which have been observed but a few times north of the boundary. Great care has been taken to state precisely the geographic limits of these species and subspecies. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Ancient Fauna of Nebraska: A Description of Remains of Extinct Mammalia and Chelonia, From the Mauvaises Terres of Nebraska The present Memoir, entitled "The Ancient Fauna of Nebraska," is founded upon a large and highly important collection of fossil remains of Mammalia and Chelonia, of the Eocene Period, from Nebraska Territory, which have been submitted to me for examination by the Smithsonian Institution, Dr. David Dale Owen, of New Harmony, Indiana, and Dr. Hiram A. Prout and Prof O'Loghland, of St. Louis, to whom I express my sincere thanks for the interest they have taken in my labors. To Prof. S. F. Baird, Dr. S. D. Culbertson, Messrs. Alexander, Joseph, and Thaddeus Culbertson, Capt. Stewart Van Vliet, Dr. S. G. Morton, Dr. John H. B. M'Clellan, Dr. A. H. Senseny, and Mr. J. S. Phillips, I am also obliged for the aid which they have contributed to the work. I embrace the present occasion to acknowledge the talent of the artists who have added so greatly to the value of the Memoir, by the excellent and faithful drawings which accompany it, viz.: Mr. A. Sonrel, of Woburn Centre, near Boston, and Messrs. A. J. Ibbotson, A. Frey, F. Shell, and I. Butler, of Philadelphia.
