Abstract: "Quality of life" is a dynamic construct. Broadly defined, it is an individual's satisfaction with the major areas of his/her life. It is associated with multiple variables and subject to change over time. An objective of this investigation was to evaluate if malocclusion and other oro-facial conditions affect oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL). A further goal was to evaluate if changes in OHRQ0L occur with orthodontic treatment. A final aim was to evaluate the correlation between child and caregiver reports of OHRQoL. A convenience sample of 11-14-year-old children and their caregivers was recruited: pediatric group (N=64); orthodontic group (N=68); and cleft group (N48). Subjects completed OHRQ0L questionnaires at enrollment, 6-months and 12-months. The effects of group, time, and group X time were investigated using factorial ANOVA and Tukey-Kramer procedure, and the correlation between child and guardian responses was evaluated by comparing 31 questions common to both questionnaires utilizing the Pearson product-moment procedure. Group and time had significant effects on child OHRQ0L scores, and a significant interaction between group and time was found for the child subjects' 'emotional wellbeing' domain. Post hoc tests revealed significant differences in OHRQoL between the cleft groups and the orthodontic and pediatric dental groups across time. They also revealed significant changes in the orthodontic group's OHRQoL at the 12-month time period. Parents perceived oral and orofacial conditions to have significant impacts on child OHRQoL, with the parents of the cleft groups reporting their children to have significantly worse OHRQ0L compared to the reports of the orthodontic and pediatric dental parents. Parents also viewed their children's 'emotional well being' to change with time and the interaction of group and time to significantly impact 'functional limitation.' Post hoc tests revealed parents of the orthodontic group to report significantly more functional limitations at the 6-month time period when compared to baseline. Finally, Pearson product-moment procedure revealed a significant, positive relationship between caregiver and child responses to the OHRQoL questionnaires. Results from the present investigation suggest that the OHRQ0L of children is variable and influenced by oral condition, that OHRQoL improves during the first year of orthodontic care, and that parent perceptions of child OHRQoL is positively correlated with child reports. Abstract: Healthcare workers recognize that evaluating treatment outcomes should not simply focus on narrow measures of the presence or absence of disease. Deformity, illness, disease have significant effects on an individual's ability to manage the everyday tasks of living. The outcome of treatment on a patient's ability to perform their daily tasks is now an important measure of modem healthcare. The purpose of this study was to assess the validity and reliability of the Child Perceptions Questionnaire (CPQ11−14) and the Parent Perceptions Questionnaire (PPQ) in an American clinical population of 11-14- year-olds and their parent/caregiver. Three groups of children were recruited from: (1) orthodontic (N=68) and (2) pediatric dental clinics (N=64), Ohio State University and (3) craniofacial orthodontic clinic (N=48), the Columbus Children's Hospital. The craniofacial group was subdivided into unilateral (N=30) and bilateral cleft groups (N=18). Initial questionnaires were followed-up with a second questionnaire two weeks later. Subjects who reported no changes in either oral health or related overall well-being were included in the reliability part of the study. The intra-class correlation coefficient (ICC) was used to determine the reliability. With no 'gold standard' available against which to validate oral-health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) instruments, we adopted a presumed quality of life (PQL) scale against which we proposed to test our results. A One-Way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) was used to determine the validity. One-hundred and one children and 136 parent/caregivers reported no change in oral health and were included in the test-retest reliability analysis. The ICC and associated 95% confidence interval for the overall CPQ11−14 was 0.79 [0.71-0.86]. For total PPQ score, the ICC and associated 95% confidence interval was 0.84 [0.78-0.88]. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the oral health-related quality of life for patients treated at Give Kids a Smile. Methods: Participants were asked to complete a 25-question survey regarding their child's oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL), with answers ranked on a 0 to 4 point scale. Results: A total of 78 questionnaires were completed, with the mean score of 5.19. Conclusions: Give Kids a Smile was created to treat children with unmet oral healthcare needs, therefore it was hypothesized that the OHRQoL for the children treated would be negatively impacted and thus this score high. This was not demonstrated in the current study and these findings could be due to a variety of factors, including relying on the parent to report the child's symptoms as well as low oral health literacy for parents completing the questionnaires.

Introduction: Children and adolescents with cancer may present with oral complications due to its treatment and/or disease that may compromise their quality of life. Objectives:To assess the oral health related quality of life of children and adolescents undergoing treatment for cancer at a pediatric oncology center.Methods: Ten patients undergoing treatment for cancer aged 8 to 14 years old were assessed between May and July 2015. Information collected was: demographic data, medical history, oncologic diagnoses and chief oral complaint. Measures of caries experience (DMFT/deft index) and periodontal disease (Community Periodontal Index) were calculated. Oral health related quality of life was assessed by the Portuguese validated version of the Child Perceptions Questionnaire in two groups of children: 8 to 10 years old and 11 to 14 years old. Results: Most of the patients were undergoing chemotherapy (n=6), three were undergoing chemotherapy associated with head and neck radiotherapy, and one were undergoing head and neck radiotherapy. Xerostomia, dry lips, dysgeusia and orofacial pain were the most oral complaints among patients. The mean dmft was 4.2, DMFT was 0.9 and CPI was 2.7. Regarding quality of life, 50% of subjects aged 8-10 reported experiencing oral symptoms u201cOftenu201d or u201cEveryday/Almost everydayu201d while 67% of subjects aged 11-14 reported experiencing functional limitations u201cOftenu201d or u201cEveryday/Almost everydayu201d. There was a significant difference between childu2019s and parents' perception on functional limitations on 8 to 10 years old group. Conclusions: Oral complications due to cancer therapy may have a negative impact on quality of life of children and adolescents undergoing cancer therapy.

The purpose of this study was to assess the baseline oral health quality of life of high-risk children and examine differences in oral health quality of life according to the child's treatment needs at an oral screening exam. We hypothesized that a child's oral health related Quality of Life (QOL) would be correlated with dental treatment needs. This study was a cross-sectional design with subjects who were 8-14 year old patients of Virginia Commonwealth University and/or members of the Boys and Girls Club of Metro Richmond. The oral health quality of life was measured using the Child Perception Questionnaire (CPQ). It is a multidimensional scale that includes items concerning functional aspects including oral pain and discomfort, but also includes psychological and social aspects. The four domains tested are: oral symptoms, functional limitations, emotional well-being and social well-being. The children were asked to report on these domains as they related to their oral health in the past 3 months. The dental treatment needs of the children were categorized as (0) no future needs, or (1) restorative or orthodontic needs. Those with no future needs were scheduled for a 6 months periodic exam and prophylaxis (cleaning). The children in need of restorative treatment were scheduled for such (restorations, stainless steel crowns, extractions), and those in need of orthodontics were referred for consult to an orthodontist. The final sample population consisted of 107 children, predominately African American (84%). The intra-oral screenings revealed 75% of children required future dental treatment, specifically 84% restorative and 12% orthodontic work and 25% in need of preventative recall (cleaning and exam at 6 months). Overall, children reported high levels of oral health quality of life. When asked about the overall health of their teeth, lips, jaws and mouth, 39 % (n=42) reported excellent or very good, 50% (n=53) reported good, and 9% (n=10) reported fair or poor. When asked how "overall life" was affected by oral health, 72% (n=77) reported very little or not at all, 13% (n=14) reported some, and 15% (n=16) reported a lot or very much. There were no significant correlations between the oral health quality of life domains and the children's dental treatment needs.

There is a dearth of information as to how malocclusion and its treatment impacts on the life quality of children, which has obvious implications in assessing orthodontic treatment need and evaluating outcomes from orthodontic care. This prospective longitudinal study was conducted to identify associations between orthodontic treatment need and child oral health-related quality of life (COHQoL); to determine the level of agreement between parents' and children's perceptions of COHQoL; to determine changes in COHQoL as a result of undergoing fixed orthodontic appliance therapy and to determine changes in COHQoL following orthodontic treatment. Children (aged 11-14) seeking orthodontic treatment were recruited in this study and followed-up over a three year period. Children's parents were also recruited at baseline. Children self-completed the Child Perceptions Questionnaire (CPQ) at baseline (pre-treatment status and expectations of treatment), during orthodontic treatment (at one week, one month, three months, six months, twelve months, and eighteen months after insertion of fixed appliance), and 6-months post-treatment. Their parents completed the Parental Perception Questionnaire (PPQ) and Family Impact scale (FIS) prior to treatment. Children's pretreatment occlusal models were assessed by three commonly used occlusal indices: Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN) including Aesthetic Components (AC) and Dental Health Components (DHC), Index of Complexity, Outcome and Need (ICON) and the Dental Aesthetic Index (DAI). Improvements in occlusion following orthodontic treatment was determined by assessing differences in ICON scores obtained from pre- and post- treatment orthodontic casts. CPQ scores and AC scores were significant correlated (r=0.27, p0.05). Decades of research have demonstrated that the parent-child dyad and the environment of the familyâ€"which includes all primary caregiversâ€"are at the foundation of children's well- being and healthy development. From birth, children are learning and rely on parents and the other caregivers in their lives to protect and care for them. The impact of parents may never be greater than during the earliest years of life, when a child's brain is rapidly developing and when nearly all of her or his experiences are created and shaped by parents and the family environment. Parents help children build and refine their knowledge and skills, charting a trajectory for their health and well-being during childhood and beyond. The experience of parenting also impacts parents themselves. For instance, parenting can enrich and give focus to parents' lives; generate stress or calm; and create any number of emotions, including feelings of happiness, sadness, fulfillment, and anger. Parenting of young children today takes place in the context of significant ongoing developments. These include: a rapidly growing body of science on early childhood, increases in funding for programs and services for families, changing demographics of the U.S. population, and greater diversity of family structure. Additionally, parenting is increasingly being shaped by technology and increased access to information about parenting. Parenting Matters identifies parenting knowledge, attitudes, and practices associated with positive developmental outcomes in children ages 0-8; universal/preventive and targeted strategies used in a variety of settings that have been effective with parents of young children and that support the identified knowledge, attitudes, and practices; and barriers to and facilitators for parents' use of practices that lead to healthy child outcomes as well as their participation in effective programs and services. This report makes recommendations directed at an array of stakeholders, for promoting the wide-scale adoption of effective programs and services for parents and on areas that warrant further research to inform policy and practice. It is meant to serve as a roadmap for the future of parenting policy, research, and practice in the United States.
