Download Of Beards and Men Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
Beards—they’re all the rage these days. Take a look around: from hip urbanites to rustic outdoorsmen, well-groomed metrosexuals to post-season hockey players, facial hair is everywhere. The New York Times traces this hairy trend to Big Apple hipsters circa 2005 and reports that today some New Yorkers pay thousands of dollars for facial hair transplants to disguise patchy, juvenile beards. And in 2014, blogger Nicki Daniels excoriated bearded hipsters for turning a symbol of manliness and power into a flimsy fashion statement. The beard, she said, has turned into the padded bra of masculinity. Of Beards and Men makes the case that today’s bearded renaissance is part of a centuries-long cycle in which facial hairstyles have varied in response to changing ideals of masculinity. Christopher Oldstone-Moore explains that the clean-shaven face has been the default style throughout Western history—see Alexander the Great’s beardless face, for example, as the Greek heroic ideal. But the primacy of razors has been challenged over the years by four great bearded movements, beginning with Hadrian in the second century and stretching to today’s bristled resurgence. The clean-shaven face today, Oldstone-Moore says, has come to signify a virtuous and sociable man, whereas the beard marks someone as self-reliant and unconventional. History, then, has established specific meanings for facial hair, which both inspire and constrain a man’s choices in how he presents himself to the world. This fascinating and erudite history of facial hair cracks the masculine hair code, shedding light on the choices men make as they shape the hair on their faces. Oldstone-Moore adeptly lays to rest common misperceptions about beards and vividly illustrates the connection between grooming, identity, culture, and masculinity. To a surprising degree, we find, the history of men is written on their faces.

Download Deaf History Unveiled Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
Deaf History Unveiled travels from a monastery, in 16th-century Spain to banquets planned by and for Deaf people in 19th-century France, from the presses of a once-activist school newspaper in pre-Depression New Jersey to the founders & deaf education in Russia to the present. Readers will discover the new themes driving Deaf history, including a telling comparison of the similarities in experience among Deaf people and African Americans, both minorities with identifying characteristics that cannot be hidden to thwart bias. The paternalism of hearing societies resounds in separate studies of deaf education and the opportunities afforded deaf people in the United States, Italy, and Hungary. Adding to its intrigue, the new research in this outstanding volume provides evidence for the previously uncredited self-determination of Deaf people in establishing education, employment, and social structures common through-out the Northern hemisphere.

Download Isis Unveiled Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
Creating a sensation when it was first published in 1877, the first major work by the young Russian noblewoman who would found the Theosophical Society devoted 1200 pages to the mysteries of ancient and modern science and theology. This new edition abridged by Theosophical scholar Michael Gomes breathes fresh life into this classic of Western esoteric thinking. Stripped of its lengthy quotations from other writers and its repetitious commentary, Isis Unveiled is revealed to be a clear and readable exploration of the universal truths of the Ancient Wisdom Tradition by one of the most remarkable women of modern times.

Download The Historicity of the Old Testament Messiah: By Whose Authority? Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
About the Book The inspiration of Church Fathers, Church Councils, and the Roman Church was to impose a Church order. The Church Order resolved to bring separation between “oppressive Judaism” and the Grace of the Risen Lord. Examination of the history of the established Church and of the scriptural intent of the I AM on current established theology does not support this pretense. The promises of Yehovah were for those who descended from Abraham, and those who chose to become his heirs according to the covenants made with them. Is the current teaching of the Church in accord with the six covenants, or were those covenants alleviated? Is the I AM the same yesterday, today, and forever? Did He change His mind? Or is there a plan laid out in Scripture that we have ignored, altered, or misunderstood. About the Author The Rev. Dr. Lawrence Olin Watt studied at Ottawa University (1969-1973, Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary (1973 and 2017-2020), Central Baptist Theological Seminary (1974-1979), Central Michigan University (1992-1994), and the University of Phoenix (2005-2013). He has been a pastor in Churches in Kansas, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, and Maryland. He was a Special Education Administrator in Prince George’s County, Maryland. He worked with emotionally challenged teenage boys in the Juvenile Justice Systems in Porter County, Indiana and Newaygo County Michigan. Dr. Watt was on the Board of Directors for a support group assisting survivors of Suicide. Dr. Watt and his wife Keli have six adult children and a plethora of foster children. Dr. Watt is currently retired from the school and Juvenile Justice systems. He Continues to serve as Pastor of Central Seventh Day Baptist Church in Upper Marlboro, Maryland.
