One of the main challenges in nuclear and particle physics in the last 20 years has been to understand how the proton's spin is built up from its quark and gluon constituents. Quark models generally predict that about 60% of the proton's spin should be carried by the spin of the quarks inside, whereas high energy scattering experiments have shown that the quark spin contribution is small - only about 30%. This result has been the underlying motivation for about 1000 theoretical papers and a global program of dedicated spin experiments at BNL, CERN, DESY and Jefferson Laboratory to map the individual quark and gluon angular momentum contributions to the proton's spin, which are now yielding exciting results. This book gives an overview of the present status of the field: what is new in the data and what can be expected in the next few years. The emphasis is on the main physical ideas and the interpretation of spin data. The interface between QCD spin physics and the famous axial U(1) problem of QCD (eta and etaprime meson physics) is also highlighted. Book jacket.

A modern understanding of the nucleon's spin structure is presented. Polarisation dependent deep inelastic experiments have shown that the helicity contribution of quarks to the nucleon spin is much smaller than expected from the simple quark model. This observation and the role of the triangle anomaly lead to the conclusion that gluons - if strongly polarised, might solve the spin problem of the nucleon. Therefore a direct gluon polarisation measurement is the one of main goals of the COMPASS experiment spin physics programme. New results for the gluon polarisation are obtained. The results strongly support the hypothesis, that the gluons inside the nucleon are weakly or not polarised. Therefore, the possible importance of quark and gluon angular momenta are discussed. A short review of the nucleon's spin structure results obtained in a Lattice Quantum Chromodynamics approach is presented. The concept that the presence of the angular momentum of quarks inside nucleon is related to the spatial deformation of the quark densities in the transverse plane is also reviewed.

This thesis discusses the process of extracting the longitudinal asymmetry, A[superscript W][subscript L] [More or Less], describing W [right arrow [mu]] production in forward kinematic regimes. This asymmetry is used to constrain our understanding of the polarized parton distribution functions characterizing [bar [Mu]] and [bar [d]] sea quarks in the proton. This asymmetry will be used to constrain the overall contribution of the sea-quarks to the total proton spin. The asymmetry is evaluated over the pseudorapidity range of the PHENIX Muon Arms, 2.1

Understanding of protons and neutrons, or "nucleons"â€"the building blocks of atomic nucleiâ€"has advanced dramatically, both theoretically and experimentally, in the past half century. A central goal of modern nuclear physics is to understand the structure of the proton and neutron directly from the dynamics of their quarks and gluons governed by the theory of their interactions, quantum chromodynamics (QCD), and how nuclear interactions between protons and neutrons emerge from these dynamics. With deeper understanding of the quark-gluon structure of matter, scientists are poised to reach a deeper picture of these building blocks, and atomic nuclei themselves, as collective many-body systems with new emergent behavior. The development of a U.S. domestic electron-ion collider (EIC) facility has the potential to answer questions that are central to completing an understanding of atoms and integral to the agenda of nuclear physics today. This study assesses the merits and significance of the science that could be addressed by an EIC, and its importance to nuclear physics in particular and to the physical sciences in general. It evaluates the significance of the science that would be enabled by the construction of an EIC, its benefits to U.S. leadership in nuclear physics, and the benefits to other fields of science of a U.S.-based EIC.

Just as Earth and other planets spin within the solar system, subatomic quark and gluon particles spin within the protons and neutrons that spin within the nucleus of an atom. Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) is a theory that describes interactions between subatomic particles and it has played a defining role in understanding the spin of protons and neutrons, which make up most of the visible mass in the universe. Experiments first completed at CERN and furthered at several other laboratories around the world revealed that surprisingly, quarks and their partnering anti-quarks are responsible for only 20 to 30 percent of proton spin. These findings pointed to what would become known as "spin crisis." More recent experiments at BNL's Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC), the first collider to smash protons that are "polarized," or made to spin in the same orientation, have helped to isolate the role of the gluon's spin within the spinning proton in hopes of resolving this crisis. In his lecture, Bazilevsky will explain how data from RHIC's PHENIX and STAR detectors help to reveal the role of gluons in the proton's spin. Bazilevsky will also discuss long- and short-term plans to attain a deeper look into the proton spin structure, utilizing RHIC and its future upgrades.
