The "United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change" (UNFCCC) is an intergovernmental treaty based on the principles of the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro. The Convention, which came into force in 1994, sets the goal of preventing dangerous anthropogenic interference with the climate system. This Element takes stock of the current state of the global climate change regime, illuminating scope for policymaking and mobilizing collective action through networked governance at all scales, from the sub-national to the highest global level of political assembly.
