When Guillermo is gifted a bag of gold coins from the 1800s by his grandmother, he is also regaled with stories of the old west and his five times Great-Uncle Gustavo. Gustavo never thought his life would be anything but robbing, running, and fending off hateful comments about his heritage. Then he met the big blond wannabe cowboy with the beat-up hat and a sometimes too big smile. Guillermo and August’s relationship is rather new, too. As events unfold in eerily similar fashion some 150 years apart, both couples face prejudice, serious injury, insecurities, drug issues, and a brush with the law, all of which test their love. Are the coins bad luck? Are they somehow magical? Does more money mean more problems? One pair is determined to survive several turns of the calendar page, while one man thinks it might be better to go their separate ways.

Pirates burying treasure along the coasts, outlaw gangs hiding their ill-gotten gains, gold mines lost and forgotten . . . there are plenty of stories all across the United States of treasure waiting to be discovered. Penfield's survey of treasure tales is a well-loved classic that will intrigue and amuse, and perhaps spark an interest in the hobby of treasure hunting. There is plenty of material here for the amateur historian or beginning treasure hunter to start with. (Just remember to check your Federal, state, or local laws before you go searching.) This book was published in 1954, but remains a fascinating introduction to this subject.

This carefully crafted ebook: “THE TREASURE TRAIL” is formatted for your eReader with a functional and detailed table of contents. Excerpt: "In the shade of Pedro Vijil's little brown adobe on the Granados rancho, a horseman squatted to repair a broken cinch with strips of rawhide, while his horse––a strong dappled roan with a smutty face––stood near, the rawhide bridle over his head and the quirt trailing the ground. The horseman's frame of mind was evidently not of the sweetest, for to Vijil he had expressed himself in forcible Mexican––which is supposed to be Spanish and often isn't––condemning the luck by which the cinch had gone bad at the wrong time, and as he tinkered he sang softly an old southern ditty...." Marah Ellis Ryan (1860–1934) was an author, actress, and activist from the United States. She was noted as an authority on the tribal life of the Indians in the United States and Mexico and went to live with the Hopi tribe becoming the only white female to be ever admitted to their secret religious rites. As a young woman she wrote poems and stories under the pen-name of “Ellis Martin.”

The tale begins over three-hundred years ago, when the Fair People—the goblins, fairies, dragons, and other fabled and fantastic creatures of a dozen lands—fled the Old World for the New, seeking haven from the ways of Man. With them came their precious jewels: diamonds, rubies, emeralds, pearls... But then the Fair People vanished, taking with them their twelve fabulous treasures. And they remained hidden until now... Across North America, these twelve treasures, over ten-thousand dollars in precious jewels, are buried. The key to finding each can be found within the twelve full color paintings and verses of The Secret. Yet The Secret is much more than that. At long last, you can learn not only the whereabouts of the Fair People's treasure, but also the modern forms and hiding places of their descendants: the Toll Trolls, Maitre D'eamons, Elf Alphas, Tupperwerewolves, Freudian Sylphs, Culture Vultures, West Ghosts and other delightful creatures in the world around us. The Secret is a field guide to them all. Many "armchair treasure hunt" books have been published over the years, most notably Masquerade (1979) by British artist Kit Williams. Masquerade promised a jewel-encrusted golden hare to the first person to unravel the riddle that Williams cleverly hid in his art. In 1982, while everyone in Britain was still madly digging up hedgerows and pastures in search of the golden hare, The Secret: A Treasure Hunt was published in America. The previous year, author and publisher Byron Preiss had traveled to 12 locations in the continental U.S. (and possibly Canada) to secretly bury a dozen ceramic casques. Each casque contained a small key that could be redeemed for one of 12 jewels Preiss kept in a safe deposit box in New York. The key to finding the casques was to match one of 12 paintings to one of 12 poetic verses, solve the resulting riddle, and start digging. Since 1982, only two of the 12 casques have been recovered. The first was located in Grant Park, Chicago, in 1984 by a group of students. The second was unearthed in 2004 in Cleveland by two members of the Quest4Treasure forum. Preiss was killed in an auto accident in the summer of 2005, but the hunt for his casques continues.
