When an exhaustive survey of the history of the state, looking toward the preparation of a Centennial history, was decided upon about four years ago, one of the first desiderata appeared to be a knowledge of what was already in print. The writer began, therefore, to compile on cards a comprehensive bibliography of Illinois history. The cards were duplicated and filed in an alphabetical and in a combined topical, chronological, and geographical arrangement. The original plan was to publish the entire bibliography, in its classified form; but the number of cards became so large - there are now over six thousand items listed - and the labor involved in securing exact titles, looking up editions, and preparing annotations was so great that it soon became evident that the entire bibliography could not be published within a reasonable length of time. Two methods of procedure then presented themselves: a select bibliography, listing only the more important books in each class, might be compiled; or certain classes might be completed and published entire. The latter method was finally decided upon for the time being; and the three bibliographies in this volume are the first published results of the work of the Illinois Historical Survey.
